Joyce Capers Glasper

On Friday, July 16, 2013, God whispered His Words,” Well done thy good and faithful servant.” God anointed and blessed the life of Joyce C. Glasper, on October 31, 1935, in Richmond, Virginia. At a young age, her spiritual foundation was nurtured in a home directed and guided by her loving mother, the late Rachel C. Smith, Cozie L. Smith and Theresa S. Capers. She demonstrated her love for the Lord through baptism at First African Baptist Church. Joyce received her education in the Richmond Public School system. Upon graduating from Armstrong High School in 1954, she attended the Medical College of Virginia School of Radiology. In addition, in 1965, she received her certification in the area of X-ray Technology in Rantoul, Illinois Her beloved cousin, Henry Sturding, was responsible for introducing her to USAF Airman, Lee W. Glasper to whom she married in September 1956. The Lord blessed this union with three children; Derrick, Valencia and Tracey. During Joyce’s marriage, she was afforded many opportunities to travel abroad. She was employed in many capacities: Woolworth’s Department Store, C& P Telephone Company and Travelers Insurance Company. After more than twenty years of dedicated service with the State Department of Rehabilitative Services, she retired. Joyce had numerous hobbies. She had a love for photography and was in her “element” when behind the camera. She collected cookbooks and was a true connoisseur of food delicacies. Joyce had an appreciation for fine arts, crafts, and vintage ware. She was a true thrift store shopper aficionado. This God-fearing woman loved the Lord and her church family. The Single’s Ministry, First African Baptist Singers and the Historical Commission were organizations in which she participated. She was actively involved in water aerobics, line dancing, AARP and training from the Police Academy. When in her presence, a glow exuded from her being. Her “Crown of Glory” captured the eyes of many which allowed her to engage in conversation. Her friendly voice and pleasant smile were gifts that attracted people. She blossomed into a true conversationalist who knew to grab one’s attention. “Lil girl” and “Young man” were her terms of endearment that served as her segways to dialogue. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children, Derrick Glasper (Tami), Valencia Glasper-Thomas (Delbert,Sr.)and Tracey D. Rinaldi;eight grandchildren,Christopher,Erica (Jamal),Jocelyn and Delbert,Jr.,Anthony,Andrew,Michael and Ahnna;two great-grandchildren;Lailen and Peyton; stepfather;Cozie Smith;sister,Teresita Pickett (Raymond);uncle ,Everette Capers(Cordelia);nieces and nephew,Kristie,Lovelee and Todd(Rosalind);a host of other relatives and friends.
