Joseph Leon Johnson

JOSEPH L. JOHNSON, son of the late Frederick and Estelle Johnson, was born on August 22, 2009 after a lengthy illness.He received his education at Douglass High School in Baltimore City. Soon after completing high school, Joseph enlisted in the United States Army. During his tour of duty he visited Germany, where he got to see the Iron Curtain, and he often talked about how fortunate we were as American citizens to have so many freedoms and choices. Four years later he began his civilian life and once again started enjoying the freedoms of our country. Joseph worked for the United States Postal Service a letter carrier. Sonny, as every one called him, was a good student of the Bible. He loved talking about the goodness of God and learning about each book of the Bible. He also loved sports, mainly boxing and especially basketball. He used to play basketball while in the Army and, also, every Sunday afternoon with the post office league teams. An avid observer of sports activities and telecasts, Sonny loved the talents of basketball greats Dr. Jay, Magic Johnson, Larry Byrd, and Michael Jordan. His boxing hero was none other than Muhammad Ali, “The Greatest”.After 24 years, Sonny retired from the Postal Service to enjoy civilian life once more. He loved to travel and he loved music. We, his family, loved to see him enjoy his music and clown around the dance floor. He floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee, he would often say.Once retired, he felt there was something else he wanted to do, so, he started looking for another line of work. Sonny found BGE. While working at BGE, he worked his way up to supervise the contractual employees. He loved the people he worked with and his management team.Joseph had one son, the late Joseph L. Johnson Jr., better known as “Joe Joe,” who passed away in 2008.Joseph leaves to mourn: his sister, Jeannette G. Pretty; step-sister, Delores C. Johnson; eight nephews, Timothy F. Pretty, Reginald and Charles Burke, Darrell and Darien James, Thomas and Shannon Parker and Lance Sousa; five nieces, Janet Pretty, Joy Burke, Jackie Pretty, Karen Jones and Andrea James; cousins, Lorraine Moore, Larae and family; special friends, Anna Barr, Ruthie and Kenny; other relatives, supportive neighbors, and friends.
