Joseph E. Felton

Joseph Edward Felton Jr. lived “God’s words.” A man of great love, understanding and compassion, Joseph was quiet in nature, shy at times, has a wonderful sense of humor but will be forever remembered as a teacher and missionary for Christ. He gave hope, help and inspiration to all, Joseph’s legacy… “Give God Your Best” by “Doing the Right Thing.”Husband and father, Joseph Edward Felton Jr. was born on January 18, 1931 to the late Joseph and Rosa Felton in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. Joseph was one of twelve children. Raised in a Christian home with the love and guidance of his parents, Joseph realized his love for Christ, accepted him as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at an early age.Joseph was an obedient and loving child. He learned at an early age the value of hard work, perseverance, integrity and the love of family…golden threads of character that made him the very special person that he was his entire life.As a young man, Joseph sought opportunity in Delaware, until he was drafted in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He rose quickly to the rank of corporal and made several very special friends during his military career. Among those friends was Edward Ferguson, of Dundalk, Maryland, who introduced him to his sister, Marlene Ferguson…who became the great love of his life and loving wife of fifty-one years.After his honorable discharge from the Army, he remained in the Army Reserves for the next three years. More importantly, he and Marlene married and eventually made their home in Maryland.Joseph worked for Bethlehem Steel Corporation for the next thirty-four years. Joseph was a leader, very active in his union and fought for equal’s rights in the workplace. Joseph was also an active member in the American Legion. He was a very talented carpenter and in his spare time made many renovations to his home and church. Joseph loved his garden and found delight in harvesting the fruits of his labor.Joseph joined The First Baptist Church in 1981. He loved his church and for the last several years served on the Board of Trustees. During his tenure as Trustee he was able to contribute to the mission and growth of his dearly loved church.Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene; six children, Sharon Figgs, Lorraine Felton, Phyllis Felton, Cathy Thompson, Joseph Felton III and David Felton; two sons-in-law, Dennis Figgs Sr., and Eugene Thompson; one daughter-in-law, Cathy Felton; eight grandchildren, Dennis Figgs Jr., Sherry Figgs, Darryn Felton, Jennifer Thompson, Jacob Thompson, Justin Garrett, Kenneth Felton, Nicole Felton; one great-granddaughter, Sidney Figgs; one brother, Mr. Franklin Felton; five sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Cole, Mrs. Lucille Griffin, Mrs. Barbara White, Ms. Rosa Tundidor, Mrs. Jacqueline Poole and a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family and friends.
