Joseph Davis

Joseph Davis, son of the late Charlie and Daisy Davis was born seventh of fourteen children on March 21, 1928, in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. Joseph departed this life at 2:41 am, Saturday, May 6, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones. He was educated in the Scotland Neck Public School system and attended Brawley High School. In his mid teens Joseph decided that farming was not for him, so he moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he worked numerous jobs until he found employment at Bethlehem Steel Corp., in Sparrows Point. Joseph was employed at Bethlehem Steel for 41 years until he retired. Joseph joined the Williams Chapel Baptist Church of Scotland Neck, North Carolina at an early age. He later became a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, in Baltimore, Maryland under the leadership of Pastor Isaac L. Williams where he accepted Christ as his Savior. Joseph had a difficult time understanding those who did not believe in God and he would often say, "I wonder who the atheist call on when they are in need of help." He met his loving and devoted wife Carolyn in 1980 and they later married on January 20, 1984. No children were born from this union, but as a blended family they have five offspring, a son, Jessie who preceded him in death, Doris, Joseph Jr., Tracy, and Kim. Joseph was affectionately known as, "Lil Joe, Big Time, and Hollywood". Before his illness he was very active and loved to socialize with family and friends regularly. He kept aware of current events by reading the newspaper faithfully and watching CNN every day without fail. As he became ill, Joseph spent more time closer to home finding enjoyment in many of his favorite things which included, but was not limited to watching westerns, Biblical stories, Orioles baseball, Ravens football, boxing, and drinking ice cold Pepsi-Cola. Joseph would mostly enjoy when his wife prepared his favorite dishes such as pig's feet, great northern beans, and her homemade chocolate cake that he said she expertly executed each time. Joseph leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 33 years, Carolyn; children, Doris Parks, Joseph Jr., Tracy Whye, and Kim Vanoo; siblings, Piney Doyle, Maggie Bradford, Paul Davis, Sallie Canton, and nine other siblings that preceded him in death, James, Elson, Celia, Christine, Rosa, Charlie, Catherine, Frank, and Mamie; grandchildren, Troy, Damon, David, Latrell, Camille, Tiara, Jordan, Daniel, Nasreen, Ijaaz, and Carlene; great-grandchildren, Brittney, Jalen and Logan; sisters-in-law, Loretta Black (Walter), Rosetta Styles (Wayne), Jeveta Jones, Judy Beatty, Rozaline Howell, and Bridget Jenkins (Keith); a loving and devoted cousin, Junior Cotton who visited him faithfully; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
