Joseph Black

Joseph Black was the youngest child born to Herbert Black and Mary Green Black. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 11, 1937 and was called from Labor to Reward on Friday, April 20, 2012. Joseph was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. On January 28, 1967 Joseph was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life, the former Mary Frances Joyner. From this union two children were born: Wanda Diane and Wyketa Lamara. Joseph was preceded in death by his son, Darnell Black and grandson, Levar Black, Sr. After Joseph began to fellowship at Victory Prayer Chapel, he joyfully accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He has been a faithful and committed member of Victory Prayer Chapel for more than twenty years. Bro. Black was known by his church family as a warm and caring man of God. He was a member of the Male Chorus, until he was unable to sing with them due to health problems. Bro. Black was a dedicated member of the Senior Usher Board, and served faithfully until his death. Even as late as Easter Sunday, before he entered the hospital, Bro. Black was on his post at the door. Bro. Black was also the church’s maintenance man. He possessed an “art” in vacuuming the carpet. When he did this, he always left a special pattern in the carpet. Everyone knew that Bro. Black was the one that vacuumed the floor. His commitment to the ministry was evident in his attendance in service and financial support. Bro. Black always could be counted upon to be in service, support the ministry and stand strong with his church leaders. He will certainly be missed by his church family. “Joe,” as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, enjoyed his life. He had a wonderful smile and cheerful personality. Joseph was a real family man. He cared deeply for his family and worked hard to provide for them. Whenever the family had events to participate in, Joseph would try his best to attend and support them, even when he did not feel well. He loved sports, especially baseball. Joseph had a strong work ethic. He worked various jobs during his career before employment at Locke Insulators. After twenty years of service, Joseph retired in December of 1997. Joseph leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, Mary Frances Black; his children, donna Black, Wanda Green and Wyketa Black; grandsons, DaRron Crank, Danzell Black Sr. , Cecil Littleton Sr., Joseph Briggs Jr. and James Green Jr.; granddaughter, Brittany Latrice Jennings; great-grandchildren, Levar Black, Jr., Danzell Black Jr., Cecil Littleton Jr. and Dakota Littleton; son-in-law, James Green Sr.; daughter-in-law, Angela Balck; his siblings, Elizabeth Stanley, Arlene James, Bertha Hill and Jerome Black (Claudia). Also surviving are: sisters-in-law, Hazel Waters of NC, Gertrude Stevens of DC, Elouise Patterson (Clarence) of NC, Betty Stevens (Henry Earl) of NC, Gladys Hubbard of NC; brothers-in-law, Luther Joyner of NC, Ralphel Joyner (Malveiar) of DC, Leon Joyner (Mae) of DC and James Joyner (Jean) of NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and a loving church family.
