Jonathan E. Edges

On Monday, June 2, 2003, Abdullah Rahman Shabazz returned to Allah.In the life the beauty of one’s soul is manifested in the lives he touches. The people who live that were touched by Jonathan are seen in the beauty of the crescent and the star. This life we celebrate and honor today was born Jonathan Edward Edges, January 5, 1942. Allah blessed Mamie and James Edges with twelve beautiful children. There were three sets of living twins - Sony and Sissy, Jean and Eugene, and Jonathan and Jo An; two individual children, Olive and Gloria; and two sets of twins who were deceased at birth. They were all born in Baltimore, Maryland. Mrs. Edges and her children are members of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin.Jonathan was educated in Baltimore City public schools and received is high school diploma in 1978 from Dunbar High School.Brother Jonathan became a member of the Fruit of Islam (F.O.I.) In the Nation of Islam. He was taught by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad that we believe in one God whose proper name is Allah. It is a must that we learn to do for self. Allah blessed the Honorable Elijah Muhammad with teaching skills and through Al-Islam, Jonathan was encouraged with faith and determination of sobriety for thirty-five years of drug addiction.Jonathan’s career as a chef began in the mid 1960's where he was a Gloryhole Steward. He sailed on passenger cruise liners. He traveled to India, Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Argentina, Mambasa, Kenya, Djibouti and Leningrad. Jonathan’s traveling experience gave him the ability to understand different cultures and customs and to interpret to a responsive degree, general requests made in other languages. He was a drug abuse counselor. Jonathan was known as a magnificent and fine chef. He prepared meals for many people who enjoyed his divine food. He catered many astonishing events such as wedding receptions, bridal and baby showers, family reunions and private dinner affairs. He catered affairs for many diverse organizations and religious communities. Allah allowed many people to work with his catering business. Jonathan and his wife Angela established Jonathan’s International Cuisine Gourmet Delicatessen (1981 - 1991). Jonathan presented his creative skills as a chef at Hamilton Landing and The Prime Rib.Jonathan’s efforts displayed qualities of commitment and enthusiasm and accented incredible organizational skills. His wide, diverse circle of friends are living testaments to the vitality Allah blessed him with. Jonathan was a progressive man with a diverse vocabulary, eloquent speaker, a planner and a thinker. He was a great man who loved to help people.Jonathan leaves to carry on his life from his first marriage, kind and gentle Gwendolyn Edges. They produced two children, Makeba and Jonathan Edwared Edges, Jr. From the second marriage he leaves soft speaking and very caring Elizabeth Edges. Jonathan Hassan Edges was produced. The third marriage was to dear, loving and sincere Angela Edges. Attilah Mosiah and Jonathan and Nafesa Edges were produced. In their apartment, Angela was unable to make it to the hospital. Allah guided Jonathan to deliver Attilah. He cut and tied the umbilical cord, removed the afterbirth and took them to the hospital. Jonathan has three grandsons, Weldon Jr., Corey and Malik.He leaves to mourn his devoted loyal sister, Jean, who assisted him in making his decision concerning his health care; warm and very supportive Olive and Jo Ann; two brothers-in-law, Sidney and John; in-laws, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
