Johnie Mae McDaniel

Johnie Mae McDaniel was born on December 18, 1932 in Chester, South Carolina to the late Dave Mobley and Frances Marbury. Preceding her in death, she was the oldest living relative and the last of her siblings. She received her education in the Chester County School System but at an early age she stopped to help her late father "Preach" Mobley with sharecropping tasks, which at this time he affectionately called her "Black Rabbit." In 1948, she met the late Wylie McDaniel Jr., affectionately known by family as "Junior" during one of his summer ritual visits to see his grandmother Annie Gladden in South Carolina. This courtship ended and the marriage began on January 27, 1951. The couple moved to Wylie's hometown of Baltimore, Maryland following the birth of their late son Larry McDaniel Sr. Out of this fruitful union three more children was born. Once in Baltimore, she soon united with St. Paul Baptist Church on Christian experience under the leadership of the late Dr. George A. Crawley Jr. Later, mJohnie joined the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. William Mayo. After a number of years, Johnie and her husband returned to St. Paul Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Nurses Unit and later held the position of President. As the kids got older, she decided to pursue a career in Cosmetology. After completing Apex Baeuty School in 1960, she worked in and owned several salons before settling in at her beloved Hair Care Beauty Salon at York Road and Coldspring. She displayed a strong skill in growing her client's hair and a genuine concern for comforting them with a listening ear for life advice. She hung her curlers up in 2014 after complications of a stroke that left her unable to function in her normal capacity. For the remainder of her life, her youngest daughter Laverne diligently devoted her life to making sure her mother, whom she often referred to as "lady bug" was taken care of until God called her home. Johnie Mae had a special love for her family and friends, known for "telling it like it is." She thoroughly enjoyed cooking and specialized in soul food, and would love to see people eat. Prior to retiring, she enjoyed sititing on the porch and block watching, otherwise known as being "nosey." As an avid Ravens' fan, she looked forward to Sundays to enjoy time eating and watching football with family. Her son Larry R. McDaniel Sr. preceded her in death on September 9, 2002. Wylie and Johnie remained together for 52 years before Wylie's passing in 2003. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings, David Mobley and Elizabeth "Lee" Mobley Houston. Johnie Mae also leaves many memories to be cherished by: her three living children, Linda Dickson (Bobby), Reginald McDaniel Sr. (Myra), and Laverne MArshall. In addition, she leaves nine grandchildren, Larry Jr., Nakia, Melissa, Richard Jr., Reginald Jr., Tayvon, Nicolas, Ryan and Ashley and lastly eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; and let's not forget Roxi, the malti-poo who she definitely spoiled with table food to no end and faithfully sat by her feet everyday.
