Johnathan Kevin Barnes (Jelly)

JOHNATHAN KEVIN BARNES SR. was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 26, 1957 to his loving parents, the late Lawrence Bernard Barnes Jr. and Jean Edges Barnes-Sherrod. When Kevin was born he was labeled as a miracle child. Kevin grew up in a household that was filled with love. At an early age he was introduced to the Christian life which he followed his entire life. Kevin was well known by many as "Jellyroll" or "Spotlight." Kevin was educated at the St. Francis and St. James Parochial Schools. He later attended Baltimore City College where he received his diploma. Upon completion of high school, Kevin joined the United States Marine Corps. In between his touring he returned home to unite with his childhood sweetheart, Jane Gilchrist and invited her to Las Vegas, Nevada to join him in Holy Matrimony; and from this union they had Shantier and Johnathan Kevin Barnes Jr. Kevin attended St. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church and later joined Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Frank Reid III. During his membership he was active in the Juvenile Justice Ministry and the Men's Bible Study group. He loved to fellowship with the members and to travel with his pastor when he preached. Kevin participated in sports at a very early age, utilizing the Somerset, Lafayette and Chick Webb recreation centers. He also made use of all the playgrounds in the area. He worked various jobs including Commercial Credit Corporation, B. Greene Food Distributor and Key Bank and Trust. Until his sudden call home he was employed at NCO Financial Systems. There was never a dull moment when Kevin was around, jovial, pleasant and easy to get along with. During the recent illness of his mother, Kevin demonstrated what it meant to be a loving and supportive son. Kevin leaves to cherish his memory: his loving mother, Jean Edges Barnes-Sherrod; his stepmother, Anne Barnes; two children, Shantier and Johnathan Kevin Barnes Jr.; four grandchildren, Darien, Derek, Deja and Isaiah; five sisters, Deborah Edges, Shelia Quarles, Shelia Boston, Bonnie McCrae and Karen Boston; two stepsisters, Andrea Henderson and Danielle Smith both of Las Vegas, Nevada; brother, Tyrone Boston; seven aunts, Olive Knight, Joanne Edges Brown, Lillian Jones, Emily Blackwell, Bettye Wilson, Linda Barnes and Leortia Pearson; three adopted aunts, Shirley Taylor, Shirley Wise and Pungie; one uncle, Orlando Johnson; one godson, Juan Coles; his godfather, two godsisters, three godbrothers, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He also leaves to mourn: his fiancee, Joanne Elsey; her daughter, Danielle Washington; his intended mother-in-law, Joyce Elsey; and grandmother, Jessie Kimble.
