John Thomas Edwin Cox

John Thomas Edwin Cox, son of the late Martin Adolph and Florence H. Cox, was born on September 18, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland.John attended Baltimore City public schools. At the age of 18, he joined the United States Navy and served his country from 1969 to 1972. During his time in the Navy, he traveled the world and came home with many stories to tell. He kept friends and family entertained for hours with tales of his adventures.Upon his discharge from the Navy, John worked for Bethlehem Steel. From there he took and interest in electrical work and worked for Baltimore Gas and Electric and Cox/Time Warner laying cable.Tommy, as his family and friends knew him, married the former Irishtine Herndon of Oxford, NC in 1976 and out of this union three children were born, Michael, Nicole and Sheena. He loved being a father and was devoted to his family.Tommy dedicated himself to Christ at an early age. Growing up in Baltimore, he was a member of Enoch Baptist Church. He later joined First Baptist Church in Oxford, NC. Most recently Tommy attended First Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland.As a lover of nature, Tommy took great joy in being outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and always had a story to tell about the one that got away. Tommy also had a pet bullfrog that he named Jeremiah. He would take Jeremiah on bike rides to tour the community.John Thomas was called home to rest on the morning of Saturday, September 20, 2003. He was preceded in death by his half-sister, Olivia Queen, three brothers, Martin Adolph, Jr. (Jackie), Jesse Gerard and William Eugene Cox.He leaves to celebrate his life: his wife, Irishtime P. Cox of Oxford, NC. three children, Michael G. Cox of Raleigh, NC, Nicole S. Cox and Sheena M. Cox of Oxford, NC; two grandchildren, Cynniah and Aahjonni; four sisters, Marlene Turner of Baltimore, MD; Florence Chapman of Royal Palm Beach, Fl., Mary L. Simmons of Somerset, NJ and Katherine Taylor of Baltimore, MD; mother-in-law, Ruby Herndon; father-in-law, Isaac Herndon; five sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, loving nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends, Leslie Shockley and Cynthia Shepard; and a host of other relatives and friends.
