On March 10, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. John Richard Taylor received his wings and rose to heaven with television remote in hand.John Richard Taylor was born July 5, 1938 to Alice Marie and Ellsworth Taylor, Sr. in Baltimore, Maryland. “Johnny Boy,” as he was called all during his childhood, was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. He attended classes at Catonsville Community College and was extremely good at working algebraic equations. He liked to exercise his intellect. While serving in the United States Army, where he was honorably discharged, he took many courses thus obtaining his High School equivalency. As a young man growing up in Cherry Hill, Johnny Boy liked to play sports, always worked hard and learned how to play musical instruments, especially the guitar.After Johnny’s (he was a man now, no longer Johnny Boy) military discharge, he migrated to Washington, D.C. where many of his relatives lived. John was a master painter and restored homes for many years. He was also employed for many years by the United States Post Office in Washington, D.C. Moving to Washington, D.C. also was a double blessing to Johnny because that was where he met the love of his life, Demetria (Mimi) Tolson. Johnny and Mimi were married December 17, 1995. Johnny and Mimi’s marriage united and strengthened their children Terrinita (Nina), Christopher (who preceded him in death) and Eric as family. John (Mimi always called him “Honey Bump” a.k.a. “Pumpkin Puss”) was loved and cared for by his wife. Mimi truly took her vows, in sickness and in health, literally.Johnny was fun loving, patient and liked to spend time with his grandchildren. Playing sports, card games, bowling and shooting pool were only some of the energetic kinds of things he liked to do. But, make no mistake; watching television with remote always in hand was something he dearly liked as well. He had a strong love of family and could always be counted on to visit his nieces, grandchildren, and cousins and was always there at family gatherings and celebrations. He would make everyone laugh with his keen sense of humor. He had a strong bond with his brother Pete (who preceded him in death). They were partners, not just brothers. Johnny was the fifth born of six siblings. Anna, Ellsworth Jr. (Junior), Myrtle and David (Pete) preceded him in death.John leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Demetria (Mimi) Tolson Taylor; daughter, Staff Sgt. Terrinita Smith; son, Eric Tolson; sister, Carrie I., Anthony; his mother-in-law, Doris Williams; five sisters-in-law, Edna Taylor (Peter), Sandra Ferguson, Adrienn Divers, Harrietta Jones and Gwen Willis; four brother-in-law, James King (Myrtle),Samuel Divers, Howard Jones and George Willis; son-in-law, Earl Smith; grandchildren, David, Malik, Yasmine, Courtney, Eric, Mia, Cayla, Ayanna and Dajuena; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and extended family.
