John James Gilchrist

Our beloved John James Gilchrist,77,departed this life,on the cold wintery evening of January 20,2009. He was born April 4, 1931 in Richmond, Virginia to the late James and Annie Gilchrist. He was the oldest of three siblings. John was preceded in death by his wife,Ann G. Gilchrist and brother,Charlie Gilchrist.John received his formal education in the Richmond Public School System and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School,class of 1950.John enlsted in the United States Army from which he achieved the rank of Corporal and served in the Korean War. For his military service,he received an honorable discharge.At an early age,John joined St. Paul's Baptist Church. Being a dedicated servant to the Lord,he served as the church sexton,was on the Poard of Trustees,Pastor's Search Committee,and as Male Usher Board president and treasurer for many years. He also enjoyed serving on the SPBC Federal Credit Union Committee.John met the love of his life and married his best friend,Ann. They were united in holy matrimony March 3, 1952. From that union,they were blessed with their daughter Gloria Ann.For over 30 years,John was employed by the United States Postal Service. He was very active in the community in which he lived and worked. As a member of the American Postal Workers Union,John held the office of Motor Vehicle Servce President. John was also a former member of the Railroad Club and held serval offices within the club.A devoted husband,father,grandfather,great-grandfather,and friend,John enjoyed entertaining. John was loved and admired by his family,friends and co-workers. He has the gift of giving and was willing to feed anyone. Because of the wonderful love he shared,he will never be forgotten and will always be in our hearts.John leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted daughter,Gloria G. Pleasants;devoted granddaughter,Anika W. Moore(Jonathan);great-granddaughter,Jayla Moore;god-grandson,Kendell Worsley;one brother,Archie Gilchrist;two sisters-in-law,Margie Graves and Wilnet Gordon;one brother-in-law,William Gordon(Angela);caregivers,Rozellar Tucker and Linda Worsley;devoted friends,Melvn Jones,Carl Smith and Willie Brown;a host of other relatives,and friends.
