John Lowery Crew, Jr.

John Lowery Crew, Jr., first born to John Lowery Crew, Sr., and Brooksie Crew, entered this life on July 30, 1965, in Baltimore, MD. On early Sunday morning, May 29, 2022, God sent a loving angel to bring John home to be with his Heavenly Father. John was christened at Grace Presbyterian Church as a baby, later to become a member for over 40 years. John served as Church Treasurer and held several roles during his tenure at Grace. Always seeking to learn more about God, in his spiritual journey, John visited many churches. His last membership was at Huber Memorial Church. John's parents were devoted to their children's well-being and to their education. He began school at Samuel Ready Private School until he transitioned to Baltimore City Schools in second grade. John made lifelong friendships at Mt. Washington Elementary, Fallstaff Middle and he graduated from Polytechnic Institute in 1983. He loved being a big part of his high school Alma Mater. He dedicated many years of service as a Director on the Executive Board of the Polytechnic Institute's Alumni Association, through which he served as the Membership Marketing Chair. He was responsible for encouraging alumni to commit to financially partnering in preserving Poly's rich legacy for current scholars. After high school, he attended and graduated from the University of Maryland in College Park in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Marketing. He later pursued his MBA in Marketing at the University of Baltimore. His professional career included Sovran Bank which later became Bank of America where he worked as Vice President and Area Banking Manager at various bank locations around Prince George's County. In 1999, he worked as the Senior Housing Program Administrator at the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) in Crownsville, MD. He was responsible for underwriting and providing mortgage loan services through the Community Development Association (CDA), Single Family Mortgage Loan Program, the Disabled Borrowers Residential Loan Program and the CDA Forward Reservation Residential Development Loan Program. John unselfishly became caregiver to his father before he departed this life and his mother making sure that all her basic needs were met. John and his mother had a very special & sincere bond which lasted a lifetime. As a huge advocate for the community of Ashburton, he served two terms as President of the Ashburton Area Association. He served with tremendous passion and vigor and led the community through unprecedented times including a pandemic. He helped to navigate the arduous CHAP process of the preservation for historic Ashburton. He was extremely passionate about the 100-year history and celebration of Ashburton. He and the Centennial Team met with the residents to gather hours of stories in the neighborhood he loved so much. Each video ended in a shout out, "Ashburton Strong" to symbolize its origin, history and legacy as one of Baltimore's great communities. He was committed to serving others. His passion will forever live through the many hearts of those in the Ashburton community. As a native Baltimorean, Larry (as we lovingly called him), loved his Baltimore Ravens and his Baltimore Orioles. For many years he had season tickets with great seats for the Ravens games. If you were one of his lucky Ravens fan friends, you would get his text with "Caw-Caw" on days with Ravens wins. John also served as a member of Black Professional Men where he mentored young men of Baltimore City and spearheaded the Pathways to a Purpose mentoring program. He was most recently proud of a weekend Memorial Day fieldtrip which consisted of a boat ride, camping and a trip to Fort McHenry that his mentees were able to participate in. Nothing gave him greater joy than to provide enriching experiences for his guys, whether it was listening to a speaker, going to the library, out to dinner or just one on one guidance. After John L. Sr. passed with Alzheimer's, John became very active in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's which is the world's largest fundraiser for Alzheimer's care, support and research that is held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide. John leaves to cherish his memory and to celebrate his life: mother Brooksie; sister Kimberly; cousin Anita Boseman & Family; cousin Rudy Crew & Family, cousins Stephanie & Adrienne Crew; God Sisters Denise Day & Lisa Rogers Coulter and a host of relatives and friends, especially his beloved Polytechnic Family. He was preceded in death by father, John Sr.; brother-in-law, Leo Smith and many aunts, uncles and cousins who were called to glory. We rejoice that they are all reunited in the presence of the Lord.
