Joe William Smith

Joseph William Smith, affectionately known as Joe, Smitty, and the Godfather, was born on February 6, 1946 in Goochland Virginia. His family was by his side as he departed this life on November 30, 2024. Preceding in his death were loving parents: Henry and Lucille Bryce. Joe attended Goochland Public Schools and ended up moving to Richmond where he worked for Phillip Morris and then went on to work for C.E. Butner & Son for many years until he retired. He was responsible for installing kitchen fire suppression and portable fire extinguisher needs throughout Central Virginia. During his early years, Joe was a member of the Regular’s Club and was also a part of the Regular’s softball team. A man who enjoyed life to the fullest, Joe found joy in the great outdoors, particularly during hunting season, an activity that allowed him to connect with nature and create lasting bonds with his friends who were known as the “hunting club”. He was also known for hosting parties and fish fry gatherings for family and friends and if anyone ever needed anything, they could always call on Joe. Joe is survived by the mother of his children, Earlene Smith, his beloved daughter Jovia Bailey (Parrish, Sr.), and son Jaron Smith (Shavonne), four grandchildren, Darien Smith, Parrish Bailey, Jr., Jarrell Smith, Saniyah Smith, great granddaughter Kai’aime Smith and Godson Keith Carpenter. Joe also leaves behind his loving sisters, Halle White and Ruby Tate, along with nieces, nephews, a host of cousins, with one devoted Nelson Daniels, who were touched by his warmth and kindness. A special recognition is reserved for his partner and caregiver, Daphne Robinson, who stood by him as his health started to decline. Joe lived a life full of laughter and cherished memories. His legacy of love, resilience, and joy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for all of the good times that he brought into the lives of others. A celebration of his life will be held at March Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., where family and friends can gather to honor his memory.
