Joe L. Burden

Joe Lewis Burden was the oldest of eight children born to the late William Madison Burden, Sr., and the late Mildred Askew Burden on May 21, 1936. Joe departed this earthly life on October 20, 2001. Joe received his education in Bertie County, North Carolina where he graduated from John B. Bond High School. He joined Conconary Baptist Church at an early age where his membership remained. At the age of 21 he united in Holy Matrimony with Alma Marie Hall. Through this union seven children were born. They moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1968. Joe started driving tractor-trailers for Skyline Trucking Company, Highs Diary and later Greenspring Diary where he decided to retire in 1995. Joe was a trophy to his friends, always going that extra mile and having an encouraging word for everyone. Joe exemplified the giving heart of God. He gave unselfishly of himself to others and was graced by the Lord to touch the lives of many people. He loved to help others in need and was the kind of person that you were always glad to see and hear from. Joe personality and forgiving nature demonstrated the love to all he came in contact with. Joe loved family gatherings, he simply loved his family. Joe’s grandchildren were the love of his life. He truly loved them all, but Joe had a special place in his heart for all his grandsons. He leaves to cherish his memories; his wife, Alma M. Burden, seven children, Freida D. Burden, Ronnie L. Burden, Sharon F. King, Sheila R. Burden, Monica M. Burden, Kimberly A. Boyd, and Yulonda N. Burden, all of Baltimore, Md; seven grandchildren Gary D. Holifield, Terell J. King, Jermaine T. Burden, Kellum Brown, Amanda J. Burden, Shawnita Boyd and Shawn S. Boyd, Jr., four great grandchildren, Darwin Holifield, Shaymia Holifield, Daquon Holifield and Jemar Burden, all of Baltimore, Md., one daughter-in-law, Angela Burden, two sons-in-law, Shawn S. Boyd, Sr., and Herbert J. King, Jr.; one sister, Nellie Ward of Ahoskie, North Carolina, six brothers, Clarence Burden of Brooklyn, New York, William Madison Burden, Jr., of Ahoskie, North Carolina, Albert Burden and Melvin Burden of Lewiston, North Carolina, Levi Burden of Aulander, North Carolina and Roy burden of Landover Maryland, a mother-in-law, four brothers-in-law, seven sisters-in-law, two devoted friends, Danielle Chester and his Main Man Linwood Bolling, a host of niece, nephews, cousins and friends.
