Jerome R. Whittington

JEROME ROBERT WHITTINGTON was born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 28,1938, to the late Jimmy Mobrey and the late Elsie Whittington Dyson. On Sunday August 15, 2010, God called Jerome home to sing in the heavenly chorus. Jerome was educated in the Baltimore City School System. He then joined the United States Army in 1955 and received an honorable discharge in 1961. He was stationed in Louisiana where he served in the engineering battalion as a heavy vehicle operator. Jerome retired from Bethlehem Steel Company after 36 years of service. Prior to Bethlehem Steel Company, he worked several other jobs. Jerome accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at an early age at St. John A.M.E. Church (Baltimore). Later, he united with Oak Street A.M.E. Church where he served faithfully as a Steward under the leadership of six pastors until his illness. Brother Whittington received the honor of Steward Emeritus in July of 2010. He was president of the Lay Organization, member of the brotherhood, and sang on various choirs in the church and throughout the Baltimore Annual Conference. He also served in the Harris Mills Missionary Society. Jerome met and later married Mildred Emory in 1963. From this union, they had two children Arron Jerome and Mia Ann Whittington. He happily embraced Mildred’s daughters Donette and Dorye as his own. Jerome more affectionately known as Romie, Poppy, Whitt, Songbird, and Cowboy enjoyed fishing with his family and friends. He always had to tend t business at “The Office” located in Mondawmin Mall at the water fountain. After his illness began to take an effect, he grasped a love for Sudoku. He loved to travel; his journeys included Nova Scotia, Cape Cod, La Vegas, Niagara Falls, and many other exciting places. Romie was always smiling and having fun with his family and friends. He never complained about anything!!! Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called him Poppy. His testimony was embodied in his favorite song, “I Don’t Know About Tomorrow” Truly he knew who held his future, and who held his hand. He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memory, his loving wife Mildred; four children Donette Branch (Johnie), Dorye Jackson (Tommie), Arron Whittington (Patricia), and Mia Whittington; three sisters, Dorothy Hodges (William), Doretha Lane, Carolyn Dickey (Nelson), and one brother, Barthwell (Bobby) Townsend; one sister-in-law, Mary Dews (Lester); five grandchildren, Kristin Goode (Jahmal), Erin Jackson, Evinn Jackson, Brondon Montaque, and Dorian Whittington-Forbes; two great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Madison Goode; a devoted cousin, James Halsay; an adopted daughter, Darlene White, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
