Jean L. Tyler

JEAN LUVENIA TYLER, the baby girl of five children to the late Phillip and Bertha Wallace Jackson, was born on March 19, 1925 in Gloucester Co., Virginia. On February 10, 2007 after a brief illness, she went to be with the Lord and Savior.Jean was affectionately known as “Momma Jean” to her family and close friends. She was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and furthered her education at Cortez Peters Business School.Momma Jean was married to the late Julian E. (Chink) Tyler, Sr., member of the black carpenters’ Union, and they were proud parents of nine children. She was a devoted and dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She also enjoyed a special relationship as aunt/mother to Gertrude and Tommy Reed.Momma Jean was employed at various companies: Raleigh Manufacturing for 16 years, London fog Manufacturing for 16 years and she retired from Maryland Specialty Wiring as a quality control specialist after 15 years. In addition to her previous employment, she was a true entrepreneur. She sold Stanley Home Products, winning top honors for highest sales. Her latest endeavors were selling motorized scooters, distributing coupons at local Giant Food Markets, and selling Stanley and other products at flea markets.At an early age, Jean was baptized and joined Union Baptist Church. She was a devoted member for over 60 years. At Union, she was a faithful member of the Sunshine Circle, Blood Pressure Monitors Unit, XYZ Club, and retired from the Usher Board after many years. She loved attending Union Baptist Church, and one of her favorite church events was preparing something delicious for the Spring Bazaar.In all that Jean did, she had a robust, enthusiastic, and fun loving attitude. Momma Jean was friendly and outgoing. She enjoyed family and friends, and because of her personality, many people were attracted to her. These qualities were also extended to the Parkview residents and her involvement in the Twenty Women Organization. Momma Jean was also active in may political and civic activities. Among her many pleasures, she enjoyed organizing and going on trips to Atlantic City, Midway, and Charlestown. As all of her children knew, pokeno nights with her Parkview friends were the highlights of her evenings.Momma Jean’s life will be remembered and cherished by: her devoted children, Joyce Ragin (Enoch) of Sumpter, S.C., Bill Shorter (Utang) of Sylmar, California, Judy Tonkins (Phil.), Deborah Allen (Arthur), Sheila Conway (Bill), Patricia Levroney (Don), Julian E. Tyler, Jr. (Jeanette), Sherrie Pridgen (Charles), Kelly Ziad (Hussein); thirteen grandchildren, Billy Conway, Kenya Conway, Kristy Myers, Shana Allen, Phillip Tonkins (Tori), Kevin Tonkins, Charles Pridgen and Casey Pridgen, Soleiman Ziad, Justin Tyler and Jonathan Marter and Julian and Rae Tyler; five great-grandchildren, Derrick, Malik and Tyler Conway, Lawrence Johnson (LJ), and Christian Myers; six sisters-in-law, Ora Jackson, Mildred Jackson, Ruth Jackson of Baltimore, Md., Mary Tyler, Zelma Littlejohn and Jacqueline Jones of Richmond, Va.; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and special friends
