Jannie Eckles Motley

JANNIE ECKLES MOTLEY, daughter of the late Peter Eckles and Jannie Wiggins-Eckles was born on February 17, 1910 in Florence, South Carolina. God, in is infinite wisdom called her home on Friday, March 24, 2006 at 4:24 pm., after a very brief illness.Jannie learned how to cook at an early age under her parent’s teaching. She was very particular about the quality of the food and the cleanliness of her kitchen. She took great pride in preparing dishes and watching people enjoy eating the meal. Her father would jokingly say to her that whoever married her would get a slow cook but a very clean cook, because he knew that she prepared her meals with love and her kitchen was sparkling clean.In 1926 she met John Jasper Motley, Sr., in Richmond, Va. They were joined in holy matrimony where they endured the test of time for 72 years. A year later they moved to Baltimore, Maryland and over time they were blessed with two sons, Howard and Jasper, Jr. who unfortunately, preceded them in death, in 1998 the Lord called John Jasper Motley, Sr., home to rest. By God’s grace and mercy, Jannie has carried the mantle since that time.Grandma has always loved the Lord and acknowledged her personal relationship with Him. She reaffirmed her salvation openly through the ministry of Pastor Joseph Payton. When trials tried to overtake her, she knew how to inwardly pray and find strength through son and meditation. One of her favorite songs was Silent Night, Holy Night at any time of the year.Jannie, affectionately known as “The Queen” was very witty and nurturing. She had a clever way of expressing her sense of humor. She was a very strong-willed woman and she loved her family.She leaves to cherish her memories, eight grandchildren, Theresa, Valarie, Margie, Glynnis, Marsha, Tracey and Debra of Baltimore, Maryland and Lolita of Valdosta. GA. Two grandsons, Timothy and Anthony of Baltimore, Maryland; four grandsons-in-law, Allen Sr., Kevin Sr., and Sylvester of Baltimore, Maryland and Antonio I. of Valdosta, GA. A devoted god-daughter/friend, Mrs. Margaret Lacks, a devoted niece/daughter, Karen Gregg. Nine great-granddaughters: Krystal, Britney, Stephanie, Zuiana, Shartia, Taresa, Tina and Laquetta of Baltimore, Maryland and Lakia of Valdosta, GA. Seven great-grandson: Allen, Jr., Kevin, Jr., Tayvone, Sr., Anthony, Maurice, and Phillip of Baltimore, Maryland and Antonio, II of Valdosta, GA. Two great granddaughters-in-law, Tisha and Nika. Nine great, great-grandchildren: Sean, Akaisha, Tayvone Jr., Keon, Mikah, Kaniyah, Caron, Kenya and Kiarra. A caring friend, Christine Lawson, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends.
