Janie Green

Our Lord and Savior welcomed JANIE M. GREEN into His eternal Kingdom on March 31, 2023. Janie and her twin, Jean, beloved daughters of the late Willie Mae and Walter McGilvary Sr., were born on August 4, 1940 in Richmond, Virginia. She was educated in the Richmond Public School System. On January 5, 1957, Janie was united in holy matrimony to Thenell Green, Sr. Of this union, they were blessed with six children; 3 girls and 3 boys. Janie confessed Christ at an early age and was a member of several churches in her lifetime. Her love for her family was only surpassed by her love for God. Even in times of adversity and hardship, she loved and praised the Lord always and maintained her steadfast faith in God. Never one to complain, whenever she was asked how she was doing, she always replied that she was grateful to God that she was here. Mom, so were we - so grateful to God for you. Janie was known for her good cooking, especially her neighborhood-famous collard greens, smothered turkey wings and potato salad. Her all-time favorite food was ice cream. Mom enjoyed reading her bible, playing cards, watching wrestling, her soap operas and “Gunsmoke.” She was a devoted Ravens fan. She was quite a pool shark and could beat the best of them. Mom was always asking, “Where are my puppies?” Even they look sad and forlorn when they go into her empty room. Mom loved to ride in the car. Not to be left out of the loop, if she saw that you were putting your clothes on to go somewhere, she would hightail it and put her clothes on too so that she was going also. Every Spring, Mom delighted in the beauty of colorful birds and flowers outside her window. She had all kinds of sayings that would make you laugh your head off. Her winks, smile and contagious laugh would warm even the coldest heart and melt you like butter. She always had something thoughtful to say about everyone and would welcome you with loving arms. There was truly a loving glow surrounding her. Whenever we spoke with Mom, she never ended the conversation without saying that she loved us with all her heart and soul. NEVER EVER!! Truly, Mom was the glue that held our family together. Everlasting to Everlasting. Our love for you will always be forever. Your life was accomplished and made more amazing by the passion you held for our father, your children, family and friends. When God decided it was time for you to come Home, the evening light was waning on Friday, March 31st. We held hands, there were tears and prayers, and then you transitioned so peacefully there was nothing to do but thank God for His grace in allowing you to be with us in our lifetimes. In addition to her parents, Willie Mae and Walter McGilvary Sr., and late husband, Thenell Green Sr., Janie was preceded in death by her daughter, Sherry Ann, and her son, Jerry Earl; her sisters, Jean Bellamy (her twin) and Lovenia Jennings; brothers Nathaniel, Willie Ward, Walter McGilvary, Jr., Robert Lee, and Mason McGilvary, Sr. Cherishing her memories are her daughters, Janice Green Francis (loving and devoted son-in-law, Winston) and Denise Green Wilson (Kevin, deceased); sons, Thenell Green, Jr. (Janice), and Ricky Green; grandchildren, Lakrea Green, Thenell Green, III, Kandace Cabeza, and Daja Wilson; great grandchildren, George and Dylan; Da’vonte, Tariq, Kreonna and A’jae; siblings, Hugh McGilvary (Edna), Monroe McGilvary (Doris), and Martha Marie Johnson (Leroy Johnson, deceased); two devoted nephews, Thomas Wesley Bellamy, Jr. and Stanley Tony Bellamy; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
