Janet Tarrer Peterson

Janet Tarrer Peterson known to many as "Jenny" transitioned to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, October 6, 2017. Janet was one of seven children, born August 11, 1952 to Gladys Tarrer of Ashland, VA. She was preceded in death by her mother, Gladys Tarrer; sister, Mary Tarrer; and brother, Hubert Tarrer, Sr. She graduated from Patrick Henry High School in Hanover County and studied Computer Operations and Business Administration in Richmond, VA. at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Janet accepted Christ at an early age at Providence Baptist Church in Ashland, Virginia. Janet later became a member of St. Paul's Baptist Church and attended church regularly. She absolutely loved her church home and took detailed notes every sermon. Her favorite seat is in the cathedral on the first floor, left hand-side, back corner near the door. Janet loved her family and especially her two children, Shawn Peterson & Kendra Peterson; and her grandson, Austin Peterson. As a mother Janet always had high expectations for her children at home, stressing the importance of education. She was a supportive mother, always offering positive words of encouragement when her children pursued sports, music and their various career aspirations. As a sister, she was always bubbly, jolly and interested in getting the family together to enjoy her delicious home-cooked meals that she loved to prepare. As an aunt, she was the cool aunt, and related very well to her nieces and nephews. She loved to spend time with them enjoying their company. As a grandmother, she saw it as her role to ensure her grandson knew how much he meant to her. She frequently picked him up from school when he was in Holy Angels Daycare, attended school activities to support him and was so proud when he was accepted into his dream college, Morehouse. Janet took pride in her work and was not afraid to try new things. She held numerous positions in Financial Services, Retail, Manufacturing, and Health Care. She made major contributions to Richfood Incorporated, spending almost 30 years there as a supervisor in their Order Center, and most recently worked at Anthem as an Administrative Clerk in the Claims Processing department. Those who knew her well knew that she loved soulful music. Whenever you visited Janet, there would be music playing in the background and it would not be uncommon to see her walking around dancing as she walked, with the biggest smile on her fact. If she didn't have company, you can rest assured that she would be on the phone talking to her loved ones, which always made her very happy. She leaves to cherish her loving memory daughter, Kendra Peterson; son, Shawn Peterson; grandchild, Austin Peterson; sisters, Bessie Braxton, Edith Trent, Deacon Sophie Moses (Deacon Alvin Moses); brother, Charles Tarrer; sister-in-law, Deaconess Margaret Tarrer; daughter-in-law, Tina Peterson; devoted & loving friend, Mr. Bernard L. Peterson; 28 nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
