James J. Wiggins

James J. Wiggins, affectionately known as “Bud” was born to the late Lula and Eli Wiggins in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on July 4, 1926. He transitioned this life on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at McGuire VA Hospital. Bud was educated in the Richmond City Public Schools and served in the United States Army. He was employed with the Richmond Broom Company on Main Street until its closing. He was also employed at John’s Seafood Market on 17th Street until it closed. Bud was a cook personified and enjoyed eating, cooking for others and sharing his exotic dishes. His specialties were homemade rolls, homemade cinnamon buns, fruit cakes, deer, coon, muskrat, and possum. On Saturdays you could find Bud sitting in his chair watching westerns all day and Sundays after church he would watch his favorite football team, the Chicago Bears. He did not like to be disturbed on Monday through Friday between 12:30-1:30pm, he would be watching himself on the Young and Restless-yes, he was the original “Victor Newman.” Bud nicknamed all the children (and you know who you are). Buzzard, Bertha Butt,Frog,Snake,Henry,Loosie Goosie,White Folks, Drop Draws, Hog Jaw,Shorty,Lil Man, and Nikki just to name a few. Bud had a desire to learn all he could about the Lord. If he could not attend church he would watch Catholic Mass on TV. Before his sight began to fail him, he would get his magnifying glass and read his Bible and listen to his gospels. The love of his life and companion was Nyla. He told the doctor he could not stay in the hospital because he had to go home to care of his dog. Nyla also loved Bud, she would sit at his feet or beside his favorite chair and watch TV and eat snacks with him. Bud was preceded in death by his son, Tyrone Alexander. He leaves a legacy and fond memories to his devoted son, James T. Johnson,daughters,Sandra(Bernard)Kimbel El,Cynthia Wiggins, Maxine Wiggins, Janice Wiggins,Janalisa(Thomas)Ivory, Jacqueline (William) Cosby,Brenda (Thomas) Taylor, Deborah Wiley and Angela Hamlet; a devoted friend and care-giver,Ernesther Johnson; one brother, Clarence(Ellen) Wiggins, one sister-in-law; Ruby Wiggins, and a host of grandchildren,great-grandchildren,nieces,nephews,and other relatives and friends, who will surely miss him.
