James "Slim" Smith, Jr.

Legacy of Love In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14.2 (KJV) James Thomas Smith, Jr., “Jimmy”, better known as “Slim”, was born on September 23, 1955. He was the eldest of his siblings born to the late James Smith, Sr. and to Edmonia Smith, of Henrico, Virginia. At a young age, he gave his life to Christ and was baptized at First Union Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia. Jimmy matriculated through Richmond Public Schools and graduated from the Maggie L. Walker High School, class of 1973. He later pursued a career as a mail carrier, retiring after 30 years from the United States Postal Service. As a young man, it was evident that Jimmy was a gifted singer! He carried a vocal range from the deepest bass to the highest soprano. Jimmy’s singing talent was highly sought after, and he was a vital member of various singing groups, including “Star Material”, “The Jarmels”, and “NYCE”. While he could beautifully sing background, when singing the lead, his ability was effortless as he hit every note with precision! One of Jimmy’s favorite pastimes was playing pool. Over the years, and especially in his retirement, he honed his skills and became a very passionate player. Upon entering various pool tournaments, he obtained several trophies as a result of his refined abilities with this game. Another favorite of Jimmy’s was a relaxing weekend of fishing. He and his friends enjoyed spending time reminiscing on fond memories, all while patiently waiting to pull in “the big one” on the end of the fishing line! All who knew Jimmy would describe him as a very likable man who enjoyed debating and challenging individuals to think in ways they may not have before. Jimmy departed this life, entering eternal reward, on March 9, 2024, upon battling a bout of illness. He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Edmonia Smith; son, Jarrell Williams; grandchildren, Rozay Williams, Jionni Martin, Juelz Martin, and Jarrell Williams Martin Jr.; siblings, Raymond Smith (Brenda), David Smith, and Jacqueline Webb; his maternal aunt, Mary Houchens (Moses); his partner, Cherri Reams; nephews, a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.
