James A Smith

Bishop Smith was born to the late Willie and Mary Lou Smith on June 2, 1933 in Rich Square, North Carolina. He was the 2nd oldest of four children, one sister Mable Robinson Maggette and two brothers who preceded him in death Edward “Jack” Smith and Willie “Kelly Smith, Jr. He attended public school in the North Carolina School system, when he met the late Lizzie R. Smallwood first wife. To this union four children were born: Joyce Miller (Willie); Bettyleen Smith-Jimenez (late Carlos; Barbara Smith preceded him in death and James “Dickie” M. Campbell (Theresa). He relocated his growing family to the Washington, DC area in the early 1950's He worked as mechanic at Brown dodge, Chevrolet Plymouth and Logan ford located in Virginia until he retired. Then later in his life , of course not wanting to sit idle, he worked with his son at Dickie's Designer Glass. For many years Bishop Smith preached in the Washington, DC area, before moving to the Baltimore area to preach. His last church before his health declined was at New unity Baptist church Baltimore, Maryland. He had a great love for his family. Bishop along with his first wife provided care to a numerous amount amount of children in their community. He was loved by everyone who knew him. He had a very dear heart and would do absolutely. Anything for family and others. He was not rich man, but he was rich in his generosity. He was a legacy in his own right and the eyes of his family. Some of his favorites, song by Walter Hawkins & the Love Center Choir, “Going” Up Yonder”. And a scripture he carried in his wallet, John 4:24. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” Bishop Smith departed this life to abide with his heavenly Father and join his wife Corelle Smith on Thursday, August 16, 2018 in the Northwest Hospital “Hospice” in Baltimore, MD at the of eighty five. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, sister, grandchildren; great- Great grandchildren: and a host of relatives and friends. Bishop Smith will be missed by all that came in contact with him, but he will not be forgotten as he will always remain in our hearts and minds.
