James C. Smith III

James Cleveland Smith, III (known as “Butch or Smitty”), son of the late James Cleveland Smith, Jr. and Lorene “Toots” Smith, was born January 8, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland and departed this life on April 28, 2018. James gave his life to the Lord at an early age and was baptized at St. James Episcopal Church. James received his education in the Baltimore City public schools and graduated from City College in 1965. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Maryland in 1969. James began his career as an accountant for Provident Hospital in 1970. He was then employed with Total Health Care on Division Street in the early 1990s. Later James became a special police officer for the Baltimore Convention Center in 1998. One duty he loved was “TELLING PEOPLE WHERE TO GO AND HOW TO GET THERE,” in his own way. He retired from the Convention Center in 2009, due to health issues. In 1989 he met Deborah Thompson. After being together for many years, he proposed for the third time and Deborah accepted. They were united in matrimony on November 7, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Butch enjoyed life and his family. He always wanted to participate in all family outings no matter what state the family gatherings were held. Butch’s interests were accounting, tax preparing, watching golf, watching Judge Judy, Judge Mathias, Judge Hatchett, Judge Mablean, People’s Court and Hot Bench, his favorite. James leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Deborah J. Thompson-Smith; one brother, Ronald E. Smith; two daughters, Sherri McFadden (Damien) and Maisha J. Stewart; two sons, Harold F. Haskins, Jr. and Dante C. Haskins, Sr.; nine grandsons, Brandon Newsome, Christopher Haskins, Devin Barber-Haskins, Terrance A. Mayer, d’Artagnan Haskins, Dante C. Haskins, Jr., Samuel N. Haskins, Thomas Rafus and Demetrius Walker; four granddaughters, Jalynne Charity, T’Pre M. Mayer, Amiya Haskins and Autumn S. Haskins; six great-grandsons, Kameron Newsome, Jayvon Walker, Jacoby Walker, Isiah Walker, Kingston Haskins, T’Karri Cash; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
