James L. Jones

James L. Jones, son of the late Mamie Toney was born on September 12, 1933 in Hartsville, South Carolina. He suddenly departed this life on November 24, 2020. Luke, as the family called him, started his education in Hartsville and soon enlisted in the United States Army for a short period of time. He continued his career working over 10 years with the Baltimore City Police Department. Luke later became employed with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works in the Sanitation department where he retired after devoting over 30 years of service. At the age of seven he met his childhood love, Lucille Larks. With returning to his hometown in South Carolina, 10 years would separate them, but the love for Lucille would never leave his heart. After returning to Baltimore, Luke and Lucille joined into marriage. Out of this union three children were born: Maurice D. Jones, Senceray R. Jones and Hervonya S. Jones. Luke, Dad, Pop-Pop, and Mr. J, as he was known affectionately by his family and friends, lived a joyous, happy, and prosperous life. As the oldest living patriarch of his family, before passing, Luke at the age of 87 was an active, loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend! Always living up to the name “Handyman” around the house, whenever we said “I Love You”, he would say “I Love You More”. Luke meant what he said and said what he meant, no holding back! Mr. J had a funny sense of humor and was respected by many. James is preceded in death by his mother, Mamie Toney and granddaughter, Ta’Shawna Jones. He leaves to mourn the memory of his loving spirit and long legacy with his wife, Lucille Jones; two sons, Steven A. Vision and Maurice D. Jones; three daughters, Willie Mae Smith, Senceray R. Jones and Hervonya S. Jones-Smalls; son-in-law, Greg Smalls; sister, Vera Lee Jackson; brother-in-law, Dunk Jackson. In addition, eight grandchildren, Angelo D. Johnson, Roneice L. Jones, Maurice D. Jones, Bryanna Jones, Shawnae Jones, Laquida Matthews, Brelle Smith, and Tyrell Rigby; eight great grandchildren, Dylan Rogers, D’Khori Rogers, Cameria Johnson, Kyjae Johnson, AJ Johnson, Rylie Walton, Kamiyah Jones and Zlyah Jones; special nephews and niece, Anthony Muhammad, Neil Jackson and Tonya Jackson and a host of relatives and friends.
