James Lee Barner

James Barner, born May 18, 1944, in Hanover County, Virginia, departed this life April 24, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and cherished memories. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alease Garnett and John Barner; son, Wayne Washington; daughter, Cynthia Ragland; and grandson, Dwayne Smith. James was raised in the fellowship of New Chestnut Baptist Church and later became a devoted member of Mangohick Baptist Church. He received his education at John B. Gandy High School. In June of 1968, James married his love, Elsie Spurlock. Later that same year, in October, he was drafted into the United States Army and faithfully served his country. After his honorable discharge, James began his career at Miller’s Manufacturing, then continued at Phillip Morris, where he dedicated many years of service until his retirement. James leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Elsie; one daughter, Hope (Don); one son, James Washington; one sister, Mary Parker; and seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also remembered by three bonus grandchildren, Deja (Chequel), Danyelle, and Don Jr.; three sisters-in-law, Ernestine Wills, Blanche Jackson, and Shirley King (Bernard); four brothers-in-law, Howard Spurlock, Robert Spurlock (Gertrude), Elvin Spurlock, and Percell Spurlock (Corliss); one devoted cousin, William Fox; two devoted nephews, Allen Spurlock and Erwin Spurlock; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. James was known for his charismatic personality, sharp sense of style, and the way he always carried himself with pride—never without looking his best and smelling just as good. He was a proud member of the Young Sportsman Hunt Club and found great joy in hunting and fishing, sharing deer meat and fresh fish with family and friends. He also found joy in attending gospel concerts, where his love for music and fellowship was evident. In his leisure time, James enjoyed cooking, listening to good music, and playing cards—simple joys that brought people together and created lasting memories. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his spirit will live on in the lives he touched.
