Ivan D. Barney

Ivan Douglas Barney, son of the late James and Viola Barney, was born on October 19, 1930, in Newark, New Jersey. Late Friday evening, March 11, 2011, the Lord called Ivan home to rest. Ivan received his education in Newark, New Jersey and was a graduate of the first graduating class of Sollers Point High School in Turners Station, Maryland. He attended Morgan College, now known as Morgan State University, where he played football. Ivan accepted Christ into his life and was baptized at an early age under the leadership of Pastor Brown. On December 31, 1976, he joined Little Ark Missionary Baptist Church through Christian experience under the leadership of the late Dr. Matthews Marcus Sr. He remained a faithful and active member of the church during the transition in which Dr. James L. Carter became pastor. Ivan served as a Trustee, a member of the Kitchen Committee, and a member of the Original Little Ark Missionary Baptist Church Male Chorus. Being a “ jack of all trades” Ivan held numerous jobs. He retired from the Housing Authority of Baltimore City as a Supervisor. After retirement, he continued to work, part time for the Best Western Hotel and conference Center until he became ill. Ivan was a true family man who loved and cherished his wife, his children, his grandchildren and his great grands. He was always there for them no matter what. He enjoyed sports and recreational games. He leaves to cherish his memories, a faithful and devoted wife of thirty-five years, Velma Barney; three daughters, Gwendolyn Barney of Baltimore, Maryland, Denita Jacobs of Dundalk, Maryland and Matilda Webb of Dundalk, Maryland; two son, Ivan Darnell Barney, who preceded him in death, and Darryl Eley of Randallstown, Maryland; a son-in-law, Eric Jacobs; six grandchildren, Darnell Ball ( Angela Ball) James Evans III, Donta Woods, Sharita Harrington-Bailey (Sterling Bailey III) Tavon McMilton, and Eboni Eley, thirteen great grandchildren, Jayla, Tyler, Kesean, Jordan, Daquan, Dominic, Tamia, who preceded him in death, Dominick, Sydney, Coran, Abigail, Malik, and Tywan Jr.; four special friends, Garnett Davis Jr., Stephanie Lawrence, Deacon Thurman Davis, and Brother William Jasper, and a host of other relatives and friends.
