Ida Pearl Phillips

Ida Pearl Phillips was born on March 18, 1937, in Warren County, North Carolina. She was the third of eight children born to the late Marvin T. Clanton and Rebecca Thorne-Clanton. Early Friday morning, September 6, 2003, assured by God that this phase of her work was complete, Ida peacefully exchanged her physical life on earth for life eternal at the Future Care Nursing Center in Baltimore, Maryland.Pearl, as family and friends affectionately knew her, received her early education in the public schools of Warrenton, North Carolina. At the age of 15, she moved to live with her aunt, Lillie in Baltimore, Maryland, where she continued her education in the public schools.At the age of 22, Pearl decided to make Albany, New York, her home. Upon arriving in Albany, Bernie and Jane Summer employed her to work for their family. Little did she know at the time that job would evolve into 35 years of love and dedication to Bernie and Jane, who served as a surrogate family and provided her with a “home away from home”. Several years later, Pearl moved with the Summer family to Los Angeles, California.As a child in North Carolina, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. Her Christian experience continued under the leadership of Pastor R. Johnson at the Bethany Baptist Church in West Los Angeles where she was a dedicated and faithful member. It was here one July 29, 1978, Pearl was joined in holy matrimony to Theodore (Ted) R. Phillips, Jr.Pearl loved to travel and over the years visited many places including Seattle, Mexico, Nevada, and Florida. Although well traveled, she always looked forward to “coming home”.The family will miss Pearl, but we sorrow not as those without hope, for we know that death is a sleep from which she will awaken at the glorious appearance of Jesus Christ. Pearl leaves to cherish fond memories two sisters-Shirley Goldsborough and Anna Poindexter; one brother-Jerry Clanton, all of Baltimore, Maryland; father-in-law, Theodore R. Phillips, Sr. of Los Angeles, California; one brother-in-law, James Poindexter of Baltimore, Maryland; four sisters-in-law, Tobina Clanton of Baltimore, Maryland; Louise Clanton of Washington, DC, Thelma Clanton of Albany, New York; and Shirley Phillips of Los Angeles, California; aunts, Lillie Wilson and Evelyn Thorne of Baltimore, Maryland; and Alzenia Harris of Warrenton, North Carolina; uncles, Charles Alston and Jessie Alston of Baltimore, Maryland, and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
