Ida M. Hopkins

IDA MAE HOPKINS daughter of the late Willie and Nora Foster was born on November 22, 1924, in Blackstock, South Carolina. Her only sister Ada B. Thomas preceded her in death. At an early age the family moved to Turners Station in Baltimore County, MD and then to Baltimore City. “Mother Hopkins” as she was affectionately called by many was educated in the Baltimore City Public School system. Seeking a more personal relationship with God she joined the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Joseph C. Culps and continued her spiritual guidance under her Pastor, Bishop Clifford M. Johnson, Jr. She was a member of the Silver Saints Ministry and especially enjoyed the fellowship shared with her girlfriends: Mother Ruby Gill and Mother Margaret Griffin. Earlier in her spiritual development Mother Hopkins was part of a gospel ensemble that traveled here and there to minister God’s word through song. While being employed in the Pediatrics Unit at John Hopkins Hospital she met her husband, the late Charlie Harrison Hopkins. There was no greater joy than raising and caring for her family. Whatever the task needed, a dose of love was always added, be it cooking, comforting or encouragement. These abilities are divine gifts from God that were unselfishly extended to all. Later, she worked for the Greenspring Middle School from which she retired. Mother Hopkins quietly slipped into the arms of Jesus on Friday, December 2, 2016 at home in the loving arms of her two daughters. She was blessed two weeks prior, to have celebrated her ninety second birthday with her children. She leaves to cherish her legacy and sweet loving spirit: Four children: Ernest, Sr (Elaine), Mitchell (Linda), Valerie (Myron) and Wanda Hopkins. Four grandchildren: Ernest, Jr (Karin), Eric (Tawantha), Derrick (Nisha) and Preze. Five great-grandchildren: Peyton, Trey, Kennedy, Ethan and Morgan. A nephew, Sheldon, Sr who was Just like a son. Joyce and Brandee two ladies who Mother Hopkins called special daughters. Five sisters-In-laws, four brothers-in-law and Karen her caregiver and friend. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A special “Thank You” to Mother Hopkin’s doctor, Dennis Meyer, P.A. who so affectionately attended her.
