Ida Mae Black

IDA MAE LONG BLACK was born on November 17, 1941 in Greensville County, Virginia to the late Johnnie and Esther Long. She peacefully left this life on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at Towson Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. At an early age Ida and her family moved to Baltimore, Maryland where she attended Baltimore City Public Schools. On June 25, 1960, she married Robert Black and from that union came 6 children: Sheena, Roderick, Danette, Danita, Yvette and Quentin. Ida worked in food preparation at Friendship Airport (currently known as Thurgood Marshall/BWI Airport). She also worked in food preparation at The House of Welsh Restaurant and in housekeeping at the former Morris A. Mechanic Theater in Downtown Baltimore, Maryland. Ida could cook and loved doing so. She was at times summoned by request to prepare party platters and sell home cooked dinners. Ida was also good in cosmetology, such as styling wigs and hair pieces. But most of all she loved dancing, singing, family gatherings, entertainment and having a good time. She was known throughout the Cherry Hill community as SEXY IDA. Ida was a loving and caring person who persevered to make ends meet and meet the ends she had to make. So, therefore she had low tolerance if you were lazy. Ida would always say, “I only help those who helped themselves.” Ida spoke her mind and had a way with words when speaking her truth and wisdom. Such as: “You are phony as a $3 bill” “Cross that bridge when you get to it” “You don’t have a pot to piss in and a window to throw it out” “Don’t be doing no half steppin; you either shit or get off the pot” “You can do anything you want when you put your mind to it” “Everybody you think is your friend is not your friend” Ida had numerous friends and associates throughout her lifetime and will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew her. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Thomas, Jerry, James, Brian, her grandson Reginald, and sweetheart Howard Mason. She leaves to cherish her memory: children, Sheena, Roderick, Yvette, Danita, Danette, Quentin; her cat, Kibbles; siblings, Betty, Elizabeth, Michele, Ronald, John (sister-in-law Pamela), Michael (sister-in-law Charolette); grandchildren, Joi, Adisa, Chelsea, Ebony, Aaron, Roderick Jr.; and a host of great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
