Hortense S. Maddox

HORTENSE SLINGLUFF MADDOX, daughter of the late Ethel and Roland Carrington, was born on October 27, 1926 in Baltimore, Maryland. After a lengthy illness, Hortense was peacefully called home on October 11, 2015. Hortense received her formal education in the Baltimore City Public School System. She was a proud graduate of Douglass High School. She later attended Coppin State College and Morgan State College, where she earned her bachelor's and Master's degree respectively in the field of education. Hortense was an educator in Baltimore City Public School System for 48 years. During her teaching career, she taught grade levels from kindergarten to sixth grade. Hortense had a firm belief in one's pursuit of education. These were values that she instilled in both her children and students. Her tireless dedication to teaching brought several accolades, including the distinction of being Baltimore City Teacher of the Year. Upon her retirement from the school system, Hortense pursued many of her passions. Some of her hobbies included gardening, playing the piano, sewing, line dancing, and the card game pinochle. Also, she enjoyed keeping up with current events by watching news shows on television, listening to rdio, and reading newspapers daily. Her family and friend were often recipients of the ast number of articles she deemed important for them to read and then discuss with her. Her faith kept Hortense grounded, especially in the face of adversity. Listening to gospel music ofter provided comfort during difficult times. She had a quiet demeanor and gentle spirit which enabled others to feel at ease around her. Hortense was united in marriage to the late Leon Maddox and God blessed this union with five children. She was preceded in death by George Maddox (son); Roland (brother); Calvin (twin brother); Eunice (sister); and Mary (sister), who now welcome her with open arms. Loving memories will be cherished by: her children, Marcia Bassham, Michael (Rosalie) Maddox, Carol Maddox, and Patrice (William) Gilliam; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; in-laws; nephews; nieces; a host of other relatives, friends, and devoted companion, Milton Dorsey.
