Hilda Erseline Bagby

Hilda Erseline Jones Bagby of Richmond,Virginia was born on August 17,1928 to the late Robert James and Sallie Lee Harris Jones. She was the youngest of nine children;(Constance Leola Jones Williams Spurlock,Gertrude Bernice Jones Jones,Robert Armistead Jones,Sr.,Mayme Roberta Jones Boyd Charity,Anita Elizabeth Jones,Floyd Eugene Jones,Bernard Lee Jones,Morris Hamilton Jones and Hilda Erseline Jones Bagby).Hilda was a graduate of Armstrong High School Class of 1945. She also graduated from Virginia Union University in 1952. She received an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Tennessee School of Religion,Detroit,Michigan Extension 1995. Hilda was a Teacher with the Richmond Public School System for thirty-one years.She became a member of First African Baptist Church,having been baptized on March 9,1938. She holds membership in the following organizations at FABC;Deaconess Board(past-President),Adult Handbell Choir(Emeritus),First African Baptist Singers(Honorary),Margaret R. Johnson Missionary & Educational Circle(past-President).Lott Carey Foreign Missions Society(past-Vice President),Wednesday Night Bible Study and Prayer Meeting,Older Adults Ministry,Rhythm Band. She has served in the Junior Missionaries,Youth Choir,Sunday School Teacher,Sunday School Secretary,Vacation Bible School Director,Senior Choir(past President)W.T. Johnson Memorial Choir(past-President),Young Ladies Usher Board(past President),Young Peoples Christian Council(past President)and Baptist Training Union(past President).She served with the Church Women United of Richmond(past-President)and was honored as Valiant Woman.Hilda joined Alpha Phi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,Inc. after graduation from VUU. She served as Basileus twice-20 years apart. She served as Chairman of Ebony Fashion Fair Show for many years. She was honored as Zeta of the Year by Alpha Phi Zeta Chapter and also honored as Zeta of the Year by the Norfolk Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta in 2006.Hilda traveled to South Africa in 2004 as a short-term missionary with American Baptist Churches of the South. She enjoyed serving her various organizations and traveling. She enjoyed praising God and visiting the sick and shut-ins at nursing homes and at senior citizen homes.Hilda leaves to cherish her memory;her daughter Wanda Bagby Evans(Robert);her son,Keith,Sr.,(Patricia);four grandchildren;Rev. Monica Lee Bagby,Laporsha Dortch,Keith Bagby,Jr. and Patrice Bagby;one great-grandson,Jalen Bagbybrother,Morris Jones,brother-in-law and sister-in-law,Calvin,Sr. and Vivian Bagby. There are many other devoted family and friends.
