Herbert L. Reid

Early Wednesday, February 16, 2005, God in His infinite wisdom looked down on His earth and saw a weary soul. He decided to call Herbert L. (Wink, Herb, Pop-Pop, Reid) from his labors to reward. He is preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Julia L. Reid; his son, Ananias; his parents, Reverend Ananias and Mary Reid. Also preceding him in death are his sisters, Martha Smith, Gertrude Jenkins, Ellamae McCoy, Luvenia Sheppard, Laura Simmons, and Evelyn Doxey. Let's take a little stroll back in memory lane in the life of HERBERT L. REID. Late in October 1933, Mae told her husband, Popa (as we called him) they were being blessed with another child. Happy with joy, Popa said we'll have as many children as the Lord will bless us with. To their delight, their tenth child, a bouncing baby boy, born July 9, 1934, was born. With many names, they decided to name him Herbert Lorenzo Reid. He was an eager little fellow, always playing. His brother he called "Brother" would always get him to fight for him because he could run fast. After getting beaten up a few times he told his brother, it's time for him to fight his own fights, because he was tired of getting beaten up for him! Many of his family and friends called him "Wink." No one can explain why. Wink attended school in the Oak Grove Area of the former South Norfolk, Virginia (now Chesapeake, Virginia). After graduation from Providence High 1952, Wink attended Norfolk State College (University) with a major in Chemistry. He left Norfolk State and joined the United States Army, where he served a faithful duty for 23 years. His duties included Korea, Germany, Japan, and several states in the United States. While visiting in Baltimore, Maryland, he met and courted the former Julia Jones. They were married August 10, 1955 in Norfolk, Virginia. To this union, they were blessed with three darling children, Tracey Lynette, Ananias (he died at birth), and Terri Leslie. He is also survived by two sons-in-law, Walter and Mr. Poochie; five loving and devoted grandchildren, Devon, TourŽ, Stephen, D'Aries, and Seanterria who loved and adored their "Pop-Pop"; four great grandchildren, Davon, Kaliah, Kaireeh, and Kaylah; his surviving and spoiling sisters, Thelma Clemons of Lake Worth, Florida, Sarah Gilchrist (Walter) of Chesapeake, Virginia, Corine Cross (Harold) of Portsmouth, Virginia, his one and only brother, the Reverend Dr. Milton A. Reid, Sr. (Marion) of Norfolk, Virginia; two other sisters-in-law, Alma Briley and Susie McNair both of Baltimore, Maryland; three other brothers-in-law, Clyde Doxey, Sr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Ernest and Jesse Martin both of Baltimore, Maryland. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including one truly and devoted friend, Mr. June Fries. He was a quiet man with the patience of Job. He never argued nor raised his voice, always with a gentle nod with his pipe in his mouth. We all will miss Dad, Wink, Herb, Uncle, Wink, Uncle Herb, Reid and Pop-Pop as he was called by his loved ones. We are going to hang in there. And while we are waiting for our turn to be called, we will be hoping he's saving a place not far from him in heaven!
