Henry Venable Carr

HENRY VENABLE CARR, JR. was born on December 2, 1923 in Newport News, Virginia. He was chronically ill for many years. Still, after undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for cancer of the trachea, he continued putting up a courageous fight. He passed on Friday, August 5, 2005 at St. Agnes Hospital. He was the eldest son of the late Henry and Mary Venable Carr. His wife, Rosa Hawkins Carr passed away on November 29, 2003. His siblings, Dorothy Carr Freeman, Winston Carr, and Mack Carr preceded him in going home.. Henry was a quiet, compassionate spirit that was always at peace with the world. He was the proud father of his daughter, Marcia Carr Martin and his son, Henry V. Carr III, Esq. He spent a lot of time with his children while they were growing up. He often took them to the movies and he also served as an assistant baseball coach for the baseball team at Union Memorial United Methodist Church even after his son decided that he had other talents. He was extremely proud of his only grandchild, Sherry Lynne Martin, Ph.D. who is a professor at Cornell University. He attended public school in Newport News, Virginia and graduated from Huntington High School. He received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army where he was enlisted for three years while waiting for his childhood sweetheart, Rosa Lee Hawkins to graduate from Morgan State College. He received additional schooling and training in Electronics. He worked for the Social Security Administration for 40 years as an IBM Peripheral Machine Operator. He also assisted in grinding lenses for United Optical for a short period of time after he retired. Henry will always be remembered as a quiet, alert spirit who was always willing to assist others. He continued to enjoy his favorite hobbies of going to the movies, reading several newspapers daily, and eating out after Church on Sundays. He was a faithful member of the Union Memorial United Methodist Church. Also, he was involved in the following organizations: Union Memorial United Methodist Men, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Life member of the American Legion, the Can Roy Kin Neighborhood Association, and the Forest Park Senior Center. He is survived by his sister, Margaret Carr Prillerman of Westerville, Ohio; his daughter, Marcia Carr Martin of Baltimore; his son, Henry V. Carr III, Esq. of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; his granddaughter, Sherry Martin, Ph.D. of Ithaca, New York; his sisters-in-law, Evelyn Hawkins Pettaway of Queens, New York and Dorothy Blount Carr of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania; many nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
