If you know the story of Lackawanna Blues character “Nanny”, Who ran the big house in the movie, well that was pretty much my grandmother “Dick” and I was the little boy who sat at the table taking it all in! When my grandmother moved to Richmond, VA, she had a huge house in Fulton with a sprawling kitchen across the back. She is the eldest of 13 children from South Hill/Lacrosse, VA, who’s family were sharecroppers. Her mother was a “Mid-Wife” and delivered many of her own children and others in South Hill, check your birth certificate for Hattie Kizzie! Grandma paved the way for all of her siblings and others to be able to move to the big city, and find work and start a new life. Grandma could sure cook the best fried corn, ham steak with red eye gravy, greens, chicken & dumplings, and the best sweet potato pie with candy topping you could ever eat! When the Seven Hills Nursing Home in Richmond had to close, she had to go to Chase City, which turned out to be a blessing. I want to commend the staff for being good stewards and taking great care of her. When she had to go so far from us, we were all a little worried, but God is good and a niece, who still lives in South Hill stepped up to the plate to keep constant watch over her- Love you Lucille! Grandma has out lived all her children and 12 other brother’s and sisters. She was still going strong, Alzheimer’s being her only ailment,until July 19th 2010, when the Lord called her home. She passed from complications associated with pneumonia. You want to know her secret to longevity? Grandma ate a raw white onion every day! She has never had a cold or clogged artery in her life! She is survived by nine grandchildren, 22 great- grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren! My grandmother left a lasting impression on all our lives. She was a rock that sat on a foundation of love and support. She taught us to learn to fill our lives with love and support for one another and that there are no lasting relationships without forgiveness. We love you,we miss you and you will always be with us.
