Hattie Mae Bennett

HATTIE MAE BENNETT, the daughter of the late Richard and Carrie Mae Goodson, was born July 6, 1915 in Charlotte, North Carolina where she was also educated. She departed this life on November 23, 2005, after a lengthy illness. She and married Melvin Bennett, and from their union three daughters were born Evelyn Louise, Arthur Lee and Carrie Mae. The family moved to Fairfield, Maryland. The family joined a pentecostal church named Ebenezer C.O.G.I.C. They became good friends with a couple by the name of Edna and James Tallie. Elder Tallie established his church on October 10, l955. Mother Bennett has been a member ever since, until due to her illness she was able to attend. She loved to read her Bible you would find on the kitchen table beside her every morning. She was an excellent cook, her specialty was fried chicken, sweet potato pie and peach cobbler. No one could fry chicken or make pies and cobbler like her. She loved her family dearly. On Sundays and every holiday the tradition was to meet at her home for the tastiest meal in the world. Everything was seasoned perfectly. She often said since you all love my cooking so much, maybe I should open a restaurant. She loved to travel to her home town. She was a dedicated worker for Epsteins Department Store and retired from Mary E. Rodman School. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 72 years, Melvin Bennett; three daughters, Evelyn L.Wallace, Arthur Lee Merritt and Carrie M. Moore; two sons-in-law, Joseph J. Wallace and Leonard M. Moore Jr.; seven grandchildren, Michael J. Street, Sharon P. Royster, Deborah E. Jones, Gary Jackson, Craig Bazemore, Terrell Wallace and Sean Merritt (granddaughter Sheilah M. Cager preceded her in death); brother, Robert Goodson of N.Y.C.; sister, Cleon Huntley of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Gardener of Baltimore, Md., Alice Goodson of N.Y.C. and Prezalvia Goodson of N.J; nine great-grandchildren, Katriel Jacobs, Javon Grant, Lisa Thomas, Tony Griffin, Antoine Cager Jr., Lashea Cager, Gary Jackson Jr, Kaiya Bazemore and Latonya Jackson; 4 great-great-grandchildren, Shaylah Thomas, Kyree Thomas, Justice Griffin and Destini Grant; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and friends.
