Harry Wheeler

HARRY A. WHEELER, JR., son of the late Sarah Savoy and the late Harry A. Wheeler, Sr., was born on February 5, 1935. He departed this life on May 18, 2024. Harry grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and was educated in the city school system. He graduated from Douglass High School, Class of ’54. He was a faithful member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church for over 40 years. During this time he helped complete renovations and maintenance on the church. He truly enjoyed serving others and gave nothing but his best. Harry and Florine were united in holy matrimony on March 29, 1959. From this union they were blessed with three children, Harry (Tony), Eric, and Tanja. Harry joined the Marines after high school and served in the Korean War. He then went on to work at Bethlehem Steel and became their “First Black Foreman” retiring with 25 years of dedicated service. Not ready for early retirement, Harry began working at St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center and was in charge of building maintenance before deciding to enjoy his golden years with Florine at home. Family was extremely important to Harry and being around them brought him much joy. He was affectionately called “Pop” by family and friends. Holidays were celebrated in a big way in his home and were filled with love and laughter. He looked forward to vacationing in Myrtle Beach and Virginia Beach each summer and spending quality time with family at the camper in Virginia. He loved to travel and went on many cruises. His most recent trip was to Cancun, Mexico for a family event in 2022. Harry served on the Douglass High School Class of 1954 Alumni Committee. He was one of the top ticket sellers for some of their events including the “Annual Oldies But Goodies Dance”, the “Winter Picnic”, an Island Cruise, and a Canada Trip. Some of his favorite pastimes were golfing, viewing daily talk shows and watching sports. He was a jack-of-all-trades, and enjoyed fishing and other outdoor activities with his family. He would do anything to help others and loved to laugh and tell jokes. He leaves to cherish his memory: his son, Harry (Tony); daughter, Tanja; daughter-in-law, Nadine; two granddaughters, Janay Mendez (Jeoffrey) and Nia McCreary (Brandon); three great-grandchildren, Preston, Porter and Phoenix Mendez; sisters, Mary Marshall and Gloria Rogers; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
