Gwendolyn Aldean Carter

The Obituary “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 Gwendolyn Aldean Johnson Carter was the daughter of the late Cornelia Olivia Johnson Davenport. She was married to the late Hampton Alexander Carter. From that union were five children. She was also preceded by her daughter, Ellen R. Carter-Green. Gwendolyn attended public schools in Richmond, VA and graduated from Armstrong High School, Class of 1949. She continued her education at Virginia Commonwealth University and received a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Virginia Union University, Richmond, VA. Gwendolyn worked with the Richmond Public School System’s Head Start Program and retired as a Social Worker with the City of Richmond. She made an impact on the many lives she touched. She was admired by all of the staff and recognized in the community by individuals she helped through the years. Gwendolyn accepted Christ at an early age. She was a devoted servant of Asbury United Methodist Church on Church Hill for over 50 years. Even as her health started to fail, she continued to attend church events when she could. She looked forward to attending Bible study and fellowshipping with the members. Over the years, she served as the Recording Secretary, on the Nominating, Pastor Parish and Finance Committees, and sang in the choir, just to name a few. She was a member of the United Methodist Women. She attended the Annual Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church as a Delegate on a number of occasions as well as the School of Christian Mission. She was a walking book on any topic regarding the United Methodist Church. She also worked with the Girl Scouts for over 10 years. Gwendolyn leaves to cherish her memory her family: two sons; Rodney M. Johnson (Josephine), Maurice A. Carter (Yvonne); two daughters; Judith A. Carter-Glover (Darryl) and Cheryl D. Carter; one son-in-law Adrian Green, Sr. (Ellen, Deceased); one brother, Oscar S. Davenport; one brother-in-law, Edward Carter; one sister-in-law, Nannie B. Carter; one aunt Gresham McWilliams; seven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives, and devoted friends: Reginald “Sonny” Carroll, Annie B. Richardson, Rev. Jean Page and Nannie Green.
