Gregory Lee Johnson

Gregory Lee Johnson was born on February 28, 1948, to the late James Edward Johnson and Lizzie Pearl Wyatt Johnson in Laurens, South Carolina. He departed this life on January 6, 2026. Gregory was preceded in death by his loving parents; his sister, Jean Elizabeth; and his two brothers, Samuel Lewis and Jackie Tyrone Johnson. He received his formal education at George Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn, New York. Following his graduation, Gregory answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on January 17, 1968. He served honorably, completing a tour of duty in Vietnam. During his military service, he earned several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, two Vietnam Medals, a Combat Action Ribbon, a Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, and a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on March 1, 1969. After his military service, Gregory began his professional career with IBM, where he worked as a programmer. Through years of dedication and commitment, he built a successful career before retiring. Gregory was a spiritual man who accepted Christ at an early age. He held firmly to his faith and maintained a personal relationship with God throughout his life. On March 29, 1980, Gregory was united in holy matrimony to Ruth Ann Hatcher in North Babylon, New York. Their union was one of love, strength, and enduring partnership. In his leisure time, Gregory enjoyed distance running and cycling. He had a keen interest in electronics and possessed a natural talent for organization. He also found joy in cooking and engaging in meaningful conversations. Known for his thoughtful and inquisitive nature, he could sometimes be a “doubting Thomas,” yet he always sought understanding and truth. Gregory leaves to cherish his loving memory: his devoted wife, Ruth Ann Johnson; his children, Yancy Bacu Johnson, Talatha McLaurin, and Tracey Cabanis; beloved grandchildren, Candice, Valencia, Ysrael, Brooklyn, Lexington and Madison McLaurin; his goddaughter, Karen Camile; his brother, James Andrew Johnson; his nieces, Samdrena and Staci; his cousins, Sheridan, Ronda, Alfred Jr., Chancey, Roul and Pamela; his sister-in-law, Dorothea Vanessa Hatcher; his best friend, Fitzroy Carlton Haines; and a host of other relatives and friends. Though he has departed from our sight, Gregory’s loyalty, faith, and enduring love will remain in our hearts always. His life was a beautiful expression of commitment—to his family, his faith, his work, and the many passions he embraced.
