Gracie Lucille Mayo

On the afternoon of Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Augsburg Lutheran Home, Baltimore, Maryland, and angel of the Lord spoke to Gracie Lucille and said,”Come unto Me and I will give you rest. “And so it was that God selected another beautiful flower, a rose for His heavenly garden Gracie Lucille accepted the call and rose to a higher realm with her Lord, Christ Jesus. Gracie Lucille Alexander was born July 9, 1917 to the late King David and Ann Green Alexander in Warren county, North Carolina. As a result of the death of her mother, Gracie Lucille became the mother figure for her siblings and wanted to maintain the unity of the family. Gracie Lucille attended the Warren County Training School. To further her education, se received her grammar grade teacher’s certificate from the state board of education to teach in the public elementary schools of Fayetteville, North Carolina on July 1, 1937, After teaching various grades in a one-room school house, she later became a special a special administrator. In Baltimore, she became employed at Sinai Hospital for thirty years as a certified OR technician. She retired from Sinai Hospital on September 23, 1981. Gracie Lucille accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Locust Grove Baptist Church. She continued to commit her life and dedication to Christ, which led her to join the First Charity Baptist Church under the ministry of the late Thomas C. Turner in the early sixties. She became a member of the Senior Usher Board. Her favorite sons were “Precious Lord” and “One Day at a Time”. While living in North Carolina. Gracie Lucille met James B. Mayo. Sr. After a proper courtship, they were united in holy matrimony on November 23, 1938. To this blessed union, four children were conceived – James Jr., Evelyn, David and Grace. Her great passions were cooking – especially fried chicken every Sunday morning and baking a variety of sweet potatoe dishes. Her other passions included listening to gospel songs, doing word finds, putting puzzles together, playing cards, bingo and checkers with her family and friends. Watching her favorite TV shows such as Perry Mason and the Bill Cosby Show gave her joy. Above all, she loved to bond with her children and grandchildren. As a wife, mother and grandmother, she was very devoted, loving caring and protective with a private, but calm atmosphere about her. Her family fondly knew Gracie Lucille as “Cille” and “Weezie”.Gracie Lucille leaves to cherish her memory: four loving and devoted children, James, Jr., of Baltimore, Md., Evelyn of Brooklyn, N.Y., David V. Mayo Ist, of Ellicott City, Md., and Gracy of Baltimore, Md.; son-in-law, Joseph Sr.; two daughters-in-law, Mildred and Rosetta; ten grandchildren Raymond, Anita, Joseph Jr., Monica, Angela, Joseph Jr., II, David V. Mayo, II, Tracy and Thurston; three great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Ashley and Imaro; two sisters, Catherine Smith of Richmond, Va.; six sisters-in-law, Emma Brown, Patty Brooks and Julia Mayo of Newport News, Virginia, Selma Harper of Hampton, Va., Annabell Jordan of New York and Irene Alexander of Baltimore, Maryland; four step-sisters, Irene Montique, Mary Lee Talley, Laura Marie Roberts and Julia Rose Hamilton, and a host of other devoted relatives and friends.
