Goldie J. Smith

GOLDIE JUANITA SMITH was born on March 6, 1921 to the late Rev. John H. Johnson and Sarah F. (Mannery) Johnson in Williamsport, Maryland. She departed this life on January 12, 2013. She was the youngest daughter of seven children. Goldie was raised and educated in the Annapolis Public School System. She attended Virginia State University but received her B.A. and Masters degree from Morgan State College. She accepted Christ at an early age and attended Asbury United Methodist Church where her father ministered (among other churches). As an adult she attended Sharp Street Memorial Methodist Church under the ministry of Rev. Edward G. Carroll, with whom she had a fond spiritual relationship. On July 26, 1942, she married the late Harmon S. Watson and to this union was born six children, Harmon S. Watson Jr., John H. Watson (deceased), Richard F. Watson, Michael E. Watson, Phillip L. Watson (deceased) and Angela D. Watson-Savage. In 1963, she married the late Bernard W. Smith. Goldie was employed by the Baltimore City Public School System as an elementary school teacher (specifically kindergarten thru second grade) for over thirty years until her retirement. She had a tremendous love for reading (especially Nora Roberts novels). She also enjoyed cooking and baking, working crossword and word search puzzles, playing cards, playing the slots, gardening, spending time with family and friends, watching T.V., listening to gospel and jazz music, playing the lottery, and waiting for that “GRAND PRIZE” from Publishers Clearinghouse, just to name a few!! Saddened by her loss are: her sons, Harmon S. Watson Jr. of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Richard F. Watson of Cotulla, Texas and Michael E. Watson Sr; her daughter, Angela D. Watson-Savage; daughters-in-law, Peggy Watson of Annapolis, Maryland, Rosario Watson of Cotulla, Texas and Brenda Watson; nine grandchildren, Eric Watson, Nicole Watson, Adrienne Turner, Safak Watson, Malika Watson, Michael Watson Jr., Shawn Watson, Kelly Savage and Terrie Savage; ten greatgrandchildren, Jaylen Johnson, Trenise Sample, Daesha Sanders, Rodney Ballentine, Cherise Watson, Cherae Watson, Chemere Watson, Shawn Watson and Nigel Somorin; and a host of “very special” nieces, nephews and friends. Goldie was preceded in death by her brothers, Stephen Johnson and Robert Johnson; and sisters, Johniemae Mitchell, Madeleine Washington, Georgie Arvin and Alma Stewart.
