Gloria Jean Russell

Ms. Gloria Jean Russell, daughter of Annie Russell and the late William C. Russell was born November 3, 1957 and was drawn to God’s solitude on Saturday, July 25, 2009 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Gloria was the third of five children born to William and Annie Russell. She was always “daddy’s little girl” and was admired and adored by her sister and brothers. Gloria was educated in Richmond Public Schools upon which she was a 1976 graduate of Armstrong High School. Gloria excelled scholastically and was the first member of the family to graduate from college. She earned an Associate of Applied Secretarial Science Degree from J. Sargarent Reynolds Community College in 1979, Gloria accepted Christ at an early age and joined The Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where she was a member until her death. She served on the P. Y. Hill usher board. Gloria gave birth to her only beloved son, Corey Lamont Russell who she loved, adored, and cherished to the very end. She took great pride in caring for him and ensuring that he was immaculately dressed. In 1992, Gloria became the proud grandmother of Keoni Russell. She welcomed her second grandchild, Corey Da’Shawn Russell in 1996. Her grandchildren were the joy of her heart. She supported their every dream, and took great pride in providing for their want and needs. Gloria was employed with the Defense General Supply Center of the Federal Government-DDRV Division (formerly known as Bellwood) for 32 years. She received numerous awards, recognition, and promotions for the outstanding service that she provided. She was a dedicated and committed employee until her death. Gloria was a part-time employee of J.C. Penney’s for ten years. Gloria was well known and adored by many. She was affectionately called “Chook” by childhood friends, “Glo Jean” by friends and family, and “Aunt Jean” by her nieces and nephews. She was an outgoing and adventurous person that lived life to the fullest. She did not allow obstacles to prevent her from advancement. She welcomed them as challenges and worked diligently to conquer them. Gloria was an avid bowler and a die hard Lakers and Washington Redskins fan. Gloria’s favorite pastimes were reading and traveling while shopping was her absolute favorite. Blessed to have been apart of her life and cherishing her memory devoted son, Corey L. Russell; precious grandchildren, Keoni and Corey Russell; her loving mother, Annie Russell; sister, Barbara Mae Russell; brothers, Clifton Jr. (Faye), Bernard (Lisa) and Christopher Russell; niece, Felicia Williams (Rodney); nephews, Troy Russell, Christopher Taylor, Bernard Russell Jr., and Clifton Russell III; great-nieces, Támar Williams and Aniyah Taylor; great-nephew, Christopher Taylor Jr.; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends, among them devoted, Tanya Thompson, Dorothy Henderson, Althea Coleman, Shirley Williams and Cheryl Ali, her best friend of 36 years, Sayonara Hanks, and her longtime companion of 21 years, Marlon Langhorne.
