A TIME TO BE BORN Gloria was the fifth of eight children born to the union of the late Aaron and Martha Campbell McDaniel of Baltimore, Maryland on December 11, 1928. A TIME TO GROWN Gloria attended Baltimore County Public Schools and graduated from George Washington Carver High School in Towson, Maryland. She matriculated to then Morgan State College where she majored in English and minored in social studies. She was awarded a Certificate of Meritorious Scholarship from the Pi Lambda Pi Scholastic Honorary Society and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949. Gloria attended New York University in the summers following her graduation from Morgan. She took her first sabbatical from teaching to attend Atlanta University. Later she transferred to Rutgers University where she earned her Master's degree in Library Science in 1963. Her second sabbatical led to a Certificate of Advance Study from the University of Chicago. A TIME TO LOVE On July 2, 1966, Gloria married Harold Benjamin Gary. After her retirement in 1986, Gloria and Harold relocated to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In 2000 they moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where they lived until Harold's death in 2004. She returned to Baltimore to be with her family and friends. A TIME TO WORK Gloria began her professional career in 1949 in the Frederick County Public Schools, teaching English and social studies and the following year she began teaching in the Baltimore County Public School System. During her tenure in Baltimore County, Gloria worked at Carver, Hereford, Dundalk, Towson and Woodlawn High Schools and Sudbrook Junior High School. In the fall of 1962, she became a Library Media Center Department Chairman and served in this capacity until her retirement in 1986. While residing in Hilton Head, Gloria worked part-time as Head Librarian at the Bluffton Library.
