Gloria G. Green

Mrs. Gloria Gates Green departed this life on Thursday, January 1, 2004 at Brightwood Center in Lutherville, Maryland. A native of Brunswick County, Mrs. Green was born April 9, 1930 to the late R. Garfield and Estelle Gates.“Kitty,” as she was affectionately known, was educated and graduated high school from Saint Paul’s Polytechnical Institute. She continued at Saint Paul’s for the following two years as an elementary education major. A connoisseur of higher education, she attended Cortez Peters Business School, administrative courses; Baltimore Community College, Inner Harbor Campus, Special Education; Coppin State College and Baltimore County General Hospital for medical terminology and related courses.Mrs. Green married Arthur B. Green in 1955 and relocated to Baltimore, Maryland. As a dedicated employee of Johns Hopkins Hospital, Mrs. Green retired after twenty-five years of service. She entered the education system and was a substitute teacher for four years.A civic leader, Mrs. Green received numerous awards, resolutions, citations, plaques and certificates of merit from various levels of the local government system. Among the plethora of acknowledgments are Governor’s Citations, Congressional Achievement Award, United States Senator’s personal congratulations for outstanding community service, Citation from the Legislative Black Caucus for sixteen years of service in the Berea Community and Eastside Neighborhood Association, Mayor’s Citation, City Council “President’s Certificate of Merit,” several City Council of Baltimore Resolutions, The Allen H. “Dickie Burke Humanitarian Award,” Eastern District Community Relations Council “Outstanding Community Service Award,” and special commendations from the Baltimore City Police Department.No one was a stranger to Gloria Green; her warm, loving and hospitable manner gave everyone in her company a sense of family.Her life is celebrated by: a loving husband, Arthur B. Green; one sister, Sallie G. Wallace (Phillip) of Tallahassee, Florida; four sisters-in-law, Elsie Gates of Washington, D.C., Juanita Johnson of Hackensack, New Jersey, Mabel Ellis (Harold) of Orange, New Jersey and Elois Terry (Sam) of Teaneck, New Jersey; three brothers-in-law, John Eddie Green (Irma) of Baltimore, Maryland, Elbert Green (Ethel) of Westwood, New Jersey, Willie Copeland of Baltimore, Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, devoted friends and colleagues.
