Gladys Elizabeth Phillips

Gladys Elizabeth Phillips, wife of the late Sylvester Phillips, was born March 18, 1926 in Annapolis, Maryland to the late Annias and Ethel Chambers. She quietly went to sleep in the Lord on February 27, 2003.Gladys was raised in Baltimore and attended Baltimore public schools. She worked at Archer Laundry over twenty years as a clerk before retiring in the 1980’s due to a disability.Because of the early death of our mother when Gladys was thirteen years old she became like a second mother to her siblings ages four years to twelve years old. She helped our father to cook, clean, chastise, etc. these things we took for granted but greatly appreciated more and more as we grew older.Gladys attended Old Orchard Street Methodist Church as a child and adult. She later attended Sharp Street Church. In 1985, she was baptized and added to the Central Church of Christ where she attended faithfully until her illness prevented her from attending. Gladys volunteered at McCulloh Senior Citizen Home where she lived for over twenty-five years. By 1982 she had put in more than eight thousand hours.Gladys was a loving person and shared that love with her family and friends. She especially shared that love with all three generations of nieces and nephews. She was loved, respected and admired by us all.Through her illness Gladys never complained, only wanting to know how everyone else was doing. Gladys enjoyed her independence but realized she needed assistance as her illness progressed. She moved to her brother and sister-in-law’s, Clifton and Doris Chambers, Assisted Living Home, where she received excellent care and an abundance of love.We will miss our beloved sister and aunt. We will miss her wit, her spunk, her quick tonque and her laughter. We will miss sharing our good times and bad times. We will miss sharing the things with her that we would never share with anyone else. We will not be selfish and wish she was still with us because we know she is in a better place and she will always be in our hearts and thoughts.Gladys leaves to cherish her precious memories: two sisters, Ethel Eubanks and Ellen Cooper; two brothers, Donald and Clifton Chambers; two sisters-in-law, Marion and Doris Chambers; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Also, a devoted friend, Mr. Wesley Payne.
