Gladys E. Duncan

Mrs. Duncan attended Marion County Training School in South Carolina and completed cosmetology training after moving to Baltimore, Maryland. Many of her family members, friends, and neighbors, benefited from the beauty treatments that were dispensed in the kitchen of her home on Darley Avenue. Mrs. Duncan was also trained as Senior Union Counselor by the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, Local 106 when she worked for Misty Harbor Industries. She was a certified practical nurse and retired from this profession after many years of working with private duty patients. She received several certificates of training from the Visiting Nurses Association and the State of Maryland, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Mrs. Duncan was married to Eddie” ED” Duncan; and from this union, two children, Eddie Jerome Duncan and Glenn Ellis Duncan, were born. She was loving and compassionate aunt who stepped in to help raise four of her nephews after the death of her sister. Over the years, many family members and others came to live with her, but she was especially close to her niece, Dorothy Brockington who lived with her for many years.Mrs. Duncan was a devoted Christian who loved God and her church. She joined Mt Pleasant Church soon after moving to Baltimore. She was in her attendance until her health began to fail. Gladys Duncan really enjoyed her life. She was a woman of grace, dignity, and style who loved to dress to the “nines” in her hats, suits, and dresses. She was a lifetime member and cofounder of the Moderettes Social Club. Cooking was great hobby of hers She would often use her skills to prepare dinners for her family and friends, or to raise funds for family reunions and activities. Mrs. Duncan leaves a legacy of life and love. She is survived by: her sons, Eddie Duncan, Baltimore, Maryland and Glenn Duncan, Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Alvin, Dayle, Jasmin, Glen, Annette, Andre, Glenda, Avery, Leslie, Gwendolyn, Devin and Shawn; ten great-grandchildren; sister- and brother-in-law, Sarah and Clarence Haynes, Cleveland, Ohio; brother, Lacy Brock, Baltimore, MD; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives, and her dear friends, Ida Carter, Marie Jackson, Lorraine Scott and Ruth Williams.
