Geraldine Griffin

Geraldine Wilson Merritt Griffin was born March 4, 1915, the daughter of the late Georgia and Oliver Merritt of Baltimore, Maryland. She departed this life on April 14, 2005, after a brief illness. Geraldine received her early education in the public schools of Baltimore City, a graduate of Frederick Douglass High School, June, 1933. On February 11, 1934 she married her childhood sweetheart Albert R. Griffin, Sr. and from this union they were blessed with four devoted children. She was raised in a Christian environment and attended Metropolitan Memorial Methodist Church. In her youth she was a member of the church choir, giving singing performances at Sharp Street Community Center and the Lyric Theater. Later as an adult she transferred her membership to Sharp Street United Methodist Church. She was a member and Secretary of the Club of 35', an organization formed by various members of the graduating class of Douglass High School. Over the years, the Club had contributed many scholarships and trophies to graduating seniors of Douglass High School, food baskets to the needy and many other charitable deeds. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and crossword puzzles. She was a dedicated worker in the public school system for thirty years. She retired as a secretary in 1980. A family tribute remembered, she was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. Her family was one of the great joys of her life. Preceded in death by her husband, Albert R. Griffin, Sr. and son Albert R. Griffin, Jr. she leaves to mourn: three children, Gloria G. Addison, Joan A. Obenstine and Rosetta I. Payne; three sons-in-law, Sterling Addison, Robert Payne, and Richard Obenstine; nine grandchildren, Laura Sutter, Eric Proescher, Alex Proescher, Jay Addison, Jessica Addison, Patricia Dewalt, Michael Griffin, Anita Griffin and Aluna Johnson; three nephews, Rowland Jr., Donald Cornish, and Joseph Taylor and niece Brenda Roberts; Doris Madison (godchild); Pauline Armstrong, and Mildred Campbell, Emily Lee (best friends); other relatives and friends. She was a loving wife and mother. Geraldine is departed from us. We loved her and we will miss her. She will never be forgotten.
