George William Johnson

Mr. George William Johnson,58,went home to be with the Lord at his home in Richmond,Virginia on Tuesday,December 7,2011. He was preceded in death by his parents,Cleola & Manley Johnson,Sr.,stepmother,Ada Ford and sister,Jennifer Johnson. He grew up in the West End of Richmond,where he attended Richmond Public Schools. He graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School,where he played basketball.During the years 1970-1971 as player #30,George and his team mates of Walker's Mighty Green Dragons won the championship for the VHSL Stake Group AAA. George worked at Philip Morris USA and later Richfood,Incorporated for several years. He accepted Christ and became a member of Church of God where he joined the choir. He discovered he enjoyed and had a talent for singing. This inspired George to assist with the creation of several groups such as "The Total PacKage" and "The Group." He also had a passion for dancing. No one could tell George he didn't know how to groove because when he stepped to the floor,just like his singing,he was in total control. George married who he called his soul mate and love of his life,Mrs. Barbara A. Johnson;they shared a blissful 15 years together. George was known for his smile,kindness and willingness to always lend a helping hand. All one had to do was say"need" and George would be right there to assist with whatever needed to be done. He was truly a big-hearted,sincere man who will be missed but never ever forgotten. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and very devoted wife,Barbara Johnson;two daughters,Cherly Branch and Peggy Downey;four sons,Ricky Johnson,Columbus (Dorothea),LaLonza Billings and John Grant,Jr.;stepfather,George Ford;brother,Manley Johnson,Jr.(Denise);grandmother,Georgiana A.Keith,grandchidren,LaShaunda,Tamira,Lonnie,Lalonza,Laesha,Keyonna,Corey and C`Asia;great grandchildren,Corey,Tremaine and Javon;devoted niece and nephews,Sharia and Quinton Johnson and Earl Lewis,Jr.;devoted cousin,Lorraine Ampy;two sisters-in-law.Elnora Burt and Beverly Ashby;three brothers-in-law,Thomas Ashby,Jr.,Melvin and Larry Billings;five devoted friends,Renee Rosado,Terry Black,Burt Lancaster,Mary Harkless and family,Carol Allen and a host of other family and friends.
