George Herman McLain

George Herman McLain, son of the late Louise Hopps and Benjamin McLain, and the stepson of the late Raymond Hopps, was born on July 16, 1944 in Trenton, New Jersey. He departed this life suddenly on February 25, 2003.He received his education in the Baltimore City Public School System, graduating from Dunbar High School in June 1963. Upon completion of his high school education, he enlisted in the United States Army and served for three years, where he attained the grade of Petroleum Storage Specialist.George was married to Beverly Jackson, and out of this union two daughters were born, Linda and Sharon. Hid girls, as he called them, were the gleam in his eyes and were deeply loved by him.In his lifetime, George was briefly employed at the Armco Steel Plant. In 1967, he became an employee of the Department of Corrections, as a Correctional Officer at the Baltimore City Jail and remained until his health precipitated his retirement in September, 2001, after thirty-four years of dedicated and loyal service. George loved his work and co-workers. He was and asset to both his fellow officers and administration. George was well loved by family and friends. He was considered by many to be a man of honor and integrity; a man among men.It was at his workplace that George met a group of men that he considered to be his bosom buddies, Nathan Randall (Doc), who preceded him in death, Edward Brown, Gary Kellam, Marvin Collins, Oliver Beales and Commissioner Lamont Flanigan, with whom he had a special bond and called boss. George cared about people and was willing to help anyone he could.Although he was not on the rolls of any particular fellowship, George knew and loved the Lord. He enjoyed watching the faces of those who would be amazed when he waxed philosophical. His favorite saying was, “The Lord will take care of me,” and “ God has not failed me yet.”He leaves to mourn his passing: two daughters, Linda Owens and Sharon Huff; son-in-law, John Huff (son-in-law, Charles Owens preceded him in death); and adopted son, Michael Givens; three grandchildren, Marlaina, Micayla and William Owens; a goddaughter, Balauren; two brothers, John McLain and Raymond Hopps Jr.; three sisters, Regina Spencer, Barbara Dixon and Agnes Hopps (his younger siblings, Angela Johnson and Mark Hopps preceded him in death); one uncle, Floyd Hopps; special friends, Zenda Givens; and a host of other relatives and friends.
