GEORGE MICHAEL “KOKOMO” EVANS, husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, took flight from this earthly domain on March 10, 2012. Michael was born on July 31, 1949, the youngest son, to the late Clarice Elizabeth and George Washington “Duke” Evans in Baltimore, Maryland. After the passing of his mother when he was very young, his aunts, Hattie Tracy and Marion Bowman and uncles, Luther Tracy and rev. Douglas Bowman helped his father to continue his upbringing and Christian nurturing. Michael was given the nickname of “Kokomo,” (a chocolate locomotive), by a relative at the age of five. He cherished this name and many of his friends only knew him as “Kokomo.” Kokomo was educated in the Baltimore City and Baltimore County Public School Systems. He attended Edmonson Senior High School. He was into sports and participated in both the high school wrestling team and tack team. Kokomo graduated from Edmonson in 1967. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1968 where he served as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Michael received an honorable discharge from the army in 1971. He kept his army ties by joining The American Legion Federal Post #19 Michael was employed as an Office Assistant II with the Baltimore City Housing Department for over twenty-five years. He retired from this position in 2003, only after extreme health issues. The Baltimore City Housing Department was also where he met and fell in love with his future wife Sarah Davis. Kokomo had a strong love for family. He often challenged the way many of today’s youth did not recognize the importance of respect for family values. He was very proud of and loved both his son, Korie and his adopted daughter, Cynthia. He loved children and was always ready to share, entertain and play with all the kids with whom he came in contact. Kokomo was a kid at heart. He also enjoyed a good joke and was always joking and ready to play a practical joke for a hearty laugh. His laugh was truly a recognizable and distinctive family characteristic. He had a passion for life and enjoyed it to the fullest. He also had a zest for life, but he knew that this earthly realm was not permanent. With this in mind, he rededicated his life to Christ in 2003. He would attend the early morning service and Bible class at the Church of the Redeemed of the Lord (Bishop Jerome Stokes) until his failing health prevented him from attending church activities. Michael knew the Lord as his Savior and stated that God was in control of his life. Kokomo battled cancer for ten years with a strong Christian faith and belief that God would always take care of him. Kokomo prayed daily after his morning walks. This was an active example of his faith in God’s power and protection! Michael leaves to cherish his memories on earth: his wife, Sarah; his son, Korie; his adopted daughter, Cynthia Aidoo (Samuel); his step-mother , Helen; his brother, Gregory; two sisters, Wanda and Dayna; his grandsons, Josiah and Jonathan Aidoo; four sister-in-law, Shirley Young, Tammy Riley, Arlene Davis and Ruth Evans; two brothers-in-law, Danny and Daniel Davis; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
