George Edward Powell

George Edward Powell was born August 12, 1944 to James E. and Henrietta Powell in King William County. He was the youngest son of eleven children; “the boss” and “most-spoiled” of all the Powell children. George was preceded in death by his father-a major influence and great role model throughout his life. George was educated at and graduated from Hamilton-Holmes Training School in 1963. On October 7, 1964, he married the love of his life and childhood sweetheart, the former Clara Bell Robertson, in King William County. During their wedded bliss, they were inseparable and remained happily married for 45 years. This union was blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Valerie Lynette. George was a dedicated husband and father. Every family vacation and road trip was an adventure. He was a sports fanatic and enjoyed playing and watching all sports. He shared his passion for life and his wisdom while mentoring many of the youth in his community. George was a true missionary; providing assistance wherever needed. He was a nature lover and took tremendous pride in his well-manicured lawn, his love of cars, and any activity that “kept his hands busy.” George was accomplished professionally as well. He was a dedicated Supervalu (formerly known as Richfood) employee, retiring after 34 years of service. Neither rain, sleet, nor snow would deter him from the job and the co-workers he loved. During his career, Fat Albert (his CB handle) was a mentor to many aspiring Richfood drivers. He was recognized throughout his career for his dedication, safe driving, and attendance records. George acknowledged Christ as his Savior at an early age at Saint Paul Baptist Church in Aylett, VA. It was here that he served for many years as a faithful member before being ordained as a deacon on April 29, 1990. Deacon Powell was an active leader in the ministry: Trustee, former Treasurer for over twenty years, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School committee member, Constitution committee, Cemetery committee, Budget committee, and music committee and choir president. His service to ministry extended to Mt. Sinai Baptist Church where he assisted and shared in music ministries with various choirs. George’s legacy continues through his faithful and loving wife, Clara; devoted daughter and the best “son-in-love”, Valerie Lynette and Wayne Murray and grand-dog, Musha “Muchee” Murray of Mechanicsville, VA; loving mother, Henrietta Powell; seven sisters: Estelle Brown, Rosa Vessels (Mackes), Anne Vessels, Doris Powell, Margaret Powell, Barbara King (Norman), Patsy Butler; three brothers: James, William, and Ellett Powell; aunt, Lucy Ann Lewis; uncle, David Powell; special cousin, Deacon Fred Brown; prayer partner and great-niece, Jasmine Holmes; best friend, Deacon Alfred D. Brooks, Sr., “Chocolate Chip”; and a host of other relatives and friends. His fatherly influence touched the lives of many who called him “Papa George” whom he proudly claimed as his children and grandchildren.
